Blackwater 53393 Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 (edited) Mustard on hotdogs! You can use it on bologna as well if you like, but only if you don’t put cheese on it too! Ketchup on fries and onion rings! Maybe on hushpuppies. Horseradish on roast beef, prime rib, or pastrami sandwich! Mayo on cheeseburger, ham ‘n’ cheese, and turkey sandwiches, (horseradish will work here too). Russian dressing only on a Reuben, (thousand island ain’t right)!! Remaulade on Po Boys and shrimp sandwiches. Occasionally, mustard on a sausage biscuit if it doesn’t have other garnishes. Tartar sauce on fried seafood, except for lobster, which should only be tempuraed if you fry it. Put anything you like on chicken, especially if it’s fried, (I like spicy BBQ sauce or a Mexican style hot sauce) but for roasted or broiled chicken, you’re on your own!! I ain’t picky!! I just know what I like!! Edited December 23, 2024 by Blackwater 53393 Quote

Pat Riot Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 Ketchup = Heinz only. My uses; hot dogs with onions. Burgers, Fries, Chicken strips, steaks when someone doesn’t know how to grill them or I want to pizz off someone. Mustard = my favorite is Pilsudski’s Polish style mustard. You can get it at Bass Pro as well as mail order. French’s brown mustard is good. So is their yellow mustard. Love them all on hot dogs, burgers, brats, sammiches. Mayonnaise = Hellman’s or Best Food (same Mayo) I put mayo on pretty much all meats. Sometimes with mustard on brats and smoked Italian sausages. It just dawned on me…I’m a condiment snob. 2 1 Quote
Alpo Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 This happened before I come along, but Mama told me about it. She and Daddy had only been married a couple years. He invited a coworker over for dinner one weekend. Mama had scrapped and saved, and managed to procure a standing rib roast. She brought it to the table and daddy carved it and put a slab on the guest's plate, and the man looked around the table and asked for ketchup. Mama got up and went in the kitchen and come back with a bottle of ketchup. After he left she turned to Daddy and said, "I don't ever want to see that son of a bitch in my house again". She was much nicer than I am. If I had made something special, and company asked for something to put on it - ketchup, mustard, barbecue sauce, salt or pepper - I would invite them to go eat somewhere else. 2 Quote

It’s always baffled me how people lose their minds if someone uses ketchup on meat, but have no problem with A1 Sauce or Worcestershire sauce. One of my favorite memories of my wife when we just getting married was my Dad & Mom took my wife and I to dinner at a Bonanza Steak House. We all ordered steaks. When the steaks came my future wife asked for mustard. As she cut her steak she was dipping it her steak in the mustard and eating it. The look on my Dad’s face was hilarious. I recall saying “Well Dad, at least it isn’t ketchup, right?” He actually laughed and agreed and we went on with dinner. He was normally a typical macho butthead when it came to how he thought people should eat their food…even when he wasn’t paying for it. 2 2 Quote

Subdeacon Joe Posted December 24, 2024 Author Posted December 24, 2024 Mustard goes on almost any meat sandwich, including BLT. Roast pork sandwiches also get mayonnaise. Most cheese sandwiches get mustard and often mayonnaise. Type of mustard is good old Frenches Yellow Mustard. Fancy mustards are usually the Sierra Nevada brand. Also I'll squeeze out a dollop along side the catsup for French Fries and Tater Tots. Catsup on meatloaf sandwiches (the one meat sandwich that never gets mustard), usually on hamburger sandwiches, and sometimes on hotdogs and bologna sandwiches. Sometimes on eggs, either scrambled or fried, along with a few dashes of Tabasco. I don't get the visceral hate expressed about people putting catsup on steak. I don't do it, but it's not the world ending catastrophe so many make it out to be. Just another sauce. Mayonnaise goes on some sandwiches depending on my mood. I'll use it on a grilled cheese sandwich instead of butter to get a nice crispy crust. Hint - spread on the mayonnaise, then sprinkle with green box parm or finely grated cheddar. Don't understand the negativity about Miracle Whip. It falls well within the realm of homemade mayonnaise. It's only a federal regulation that makes it dressing rather than mayonnaise. Tastes better than the all hallowed Dukes. Yes, I gave in once and bought some Dukes. Meh! Nothing special about it. If I'm not making my own, my preferences are Mccormick with Lime, then Best Foods, then the Walmart house brand with olive oil. Tartar Sauce- I'll sometimes use it on a cheese sandwich. Don't care for it on fish. I prefer cocktail sauce. Which sauce I'll also use instead of catsup. A good general purpose sauce us Thousand Island Dressing aka Comeback Sauce, aka Remulade (face it, when you look up half a recepts for each of those there's overlap. Seem to be variations on a theme) can go on most sandwiches, work as a dipping sauce for fries, tots, and onion rings, and as salad dressing. BBQ Sauce can be a substitute for catsup on sandwiches or as a dipping sauce. Except on scrambled eggs. Makes a great dipping sauce for carrots, celery, and lettuce. Hmmmm....weird....I like BBQ Sauce but don't like A1 Sauce, even though A1 is basically a subset of BBQ Sauce....hmmmmm. Worcestershire Sauce, use it in marinades, sometimes as a sauce on beef or pork, even a little bit on it meat on a sandwich. Use it to punch up beef stew. Quote

Blackwater 53393 Posted December 25, 2024 Posted December 25, 2024 Don’t reckon I like ketchup on any kind of meat. I WILL use spicy barbecue sauce on chicken strips, but I prefer blue cheese on those! Anytime I taste something, I don’t care who prepares it, if I feel like it could use some pepper, I will ask for it and I expect to get it!! I much prefer Heinz yellow mustard, but brown and spicy mustard is more to my liking. If a steakhouse steak or roast needs more than salt or pepper, (and I’ll always taste it first) I will send it back!! Prime rib is an exception to this as horseradish is customary for that. Worstershire is a condiment used in preparation of some meats and certain shrimp dishes. Same goes for soy sauce!! Steak sauce is okay on a burger or chopped steak, especially if it’s cooked too well done. I don’t have any “rules”! If you bought it you can throw it on the floor for all I care, but I’ll have mine my way!! 1 Quote

One cowboy, Red Cent, always ordered a piece of beef. When his food was served they would inevitably ask, "Do you need steak sauce or A-1?" His reply, "If you cooked it right I won't need it." Like you, cousin Blackwater, the exception was prime rib/horseradish. And that's pretty much the camp I'm in... stay away from my steak with any type of "sauce". 2 1 Quote

Once, at buffet brunch pre-covid, I got some "prime" rib at the carving station and gave myself a very large dollop of a very smooth, white, and creamy horseradish sauce. It looked like the mayonnaise/sour cream based stuff that barely has any horseradish in it (you already know where this is going). Cut a bite of the beef, ran it through the sauce like a tortilla chip in guacamole. Put it in my mouth and BOOM!!!! Cleared my sinuses for the next 6 months. Most of the creamy horseradish sauces you find have about 2 TBS grated horseradish to about 3/4 to 1 cup of other ingredients. This was at least 1:1. Possibly 3:1 horseradish to other ingredients. But DANG! it was good. Since then I always do a tiny sample taste of horseradish sauce. 1 2 Quote
