I just got a text, purportedly from Charlotte, I have a Charlotte phone number. The text is below.  A few countries put the currency symbol before the number, most put it after. I haven’t been in charlotte in 35 years.  Yeah, I 86ed it.  And the wording “a late fees” and “ to avoid disconnection” stands out as scammy.

Thank goodness for dumba*** criminals, huh? These scammers really have to work hard to torpedo themselves. Trouble is most people don’t look close enough to things like this and they get burnt.

Glad you caught it. :)

When I left CA I was going to change my number (area code) to one local to here in WV. When I realized how many times I would have to update my phone info I resisted. Also, I remembered how many times I have gotten a new phone only to learn that some non bill paying butthead had my new number in the past and decided the CA area code is just fine. ;)

I had a number that the previous owner was Eduardo, aka The Colombian, aka The Cook. Got rid of it.

I had a number issued for the local chapter of the Purchasing organization I was associated with.

It had previously been that of a couple of deadbeats and scammers , that was prematurely and  erroneously re-issued to us by Bell..

We were getting calls from all over, looking for payments and while Bell offered to give us a new number, all our literature etc. had been printed with that number.

It took a while for the calls to end and a lot of explanations and calls to the Head Office in Toronto to convince the collection agencies etc. to stop calling us.

Today, with the advent of "Smart" Computerized calling systems, the &*^%$(* can clone a number or create/activate an un used one for their nefarious crimes.

I make it a policy to simply not answer calls with "Private Number", "Unknown Number" or without a name attached and let it go to voice mail. If it's legit, they'll usually leave a number.

BUT there is one group of criminals out there that has been adding "VISA" to the number they are using and the 1-800 number is close to the one on my Visa card, so it's wise to stay alert.

For fraud alerts, they are sometimes legitimate. I still call the number on the back of my card or my statement, not any number in the voice mail. All legitimate fraud alerts and some scammers will leave voice mails.

Yep I still have a PRoK area code. Haven’t changed it for the same reason.
