One of the many peeves in my menagerie.

It's  "Donder and Blitzen," not "Donner and Blitzen."

https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43171/a-visit-from-st-nicholas

"More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,

And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:

"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and Vixen!

On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!

To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!

Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!""

Granted, either way it translates into English as Thunder and Lightning,  but it's nice to get it right

We played a team building game at our office "Year End Celebration".  You rolled a pair of die much like these and did whatever popped up.  One of the prompts is to recite all of Santa's Reindeer.  I did and used "Donder" as one of the names.  Several of my co-workers corrected me and called it "Donner".  I explained that I'm European and we call him "Donder".  I didn't want to get into a protracted debate with them about it.........

I thought this was going to be a cannibalism thread.

I thought this was going to be about Donner saying “No way I’m eating that, I’m outta here “

Years ago, when my daughter was 5 or 6, I told my daughter a story I made up about “Olive, the other reindeer” and how Olive really and truly liked Rudolph but didn’t know how to show it so she laughed at Rudolph when he fumbled and she would call him names. The story ended with Rudolph and Olive becoming mates and having many red nosed reindeer Santa after Rudolph retired from The Sleigh Service. :)

Thank you for reminding me of that. I had forgotten about it.
Got something in my eyes. Can’t see wright. Gotta go.

And her pronouns were "they/them".

"They" never let poor Rudolph join in any reindeer games.

perhaps multiple personalities, or at least multi gendered ....... maybe both ......

   ....... certainly a bully ...

I overthought this badly as a child.

I latched onto the name "Blitzen" -- "Lightning" in German, I thought, Santa is therefore Luftwaffe --

If the deer's name is Blitzen, then Donner obviously this is a misprint.

Thunder and Lightning are naturally paired.

It should therefore be German for Thunder --

So, in grade school, with my schoolmates loudly singing "Donner and Blitzen," I sang "Dunder undt Blitzen," in a correct Germanic accent, or as close as my grade-school understanding could frame it.

Nobody else noticed.

I was smart enough not to make an issue of it.

(Ah, childhood ... the reason my grandfather said "Hire a man when he's eighteen and still knows everything!")

There's actually a children's book about a Jack Russell named Olive who hears "Olive, the other reindeer" and thinks she must be a reindeer. The resemblance of our first Jack Russell is how she got her name.

The real Olive. The author's dog, that she based her story on.

"Olive is a relentlessly active, determined, well-loved, and sometimes confused lap dog. Olive is flattered that in the animated version of the book she was portrayed by the fabulous Drew Barrymore. The TV special was put together by Matt Groening, creator of the Simpsons."

I'm still laughing at Drew Barrymore "playing" a dog.

In a Saloon?

On Christmas Eve?

You heard the man!

We have to wait until Christmas Day to fight and argue!:P

Fixed it for you! B) Our Olive was quite real, believe me. Got her as a pup before I wen't on deployment, and took her a long time to warm up to me when I got back. She was definitely a one person dog, and was jealous and protective of my wife. She had the classic Jack Russell attitude though. She would chase a frisbee or a tennis ball until my arm ached.
