I learned several things from that news article.

 

I learned that the monkeys they used in the Tarzan movies didn't happen.

 

And more importantly I learned that the Brazilian pepper is an invasive species.

The article doesn’t say if you could shoot them if threatened. Are they on some kind of special program? You can shoot alligators and snakes right!?🙄

It's not as big a no no is it used to be, but it's still a big No-No.

They have hired exterminators for the out of control Iguana population. They use air rifles.

No, you can't shoot alligators or snakes unless certain conditions are met.

 

Alligators are a protected species that you must have a permit to hunt or harvest unless it's a nuisance gator and then a state licensed trapper must be used. That said, all bets are off if being attacked by a gator.

 

I think there are protected species of snakes in Florida also, but I don't know which ones. For some reason, you're not allowed to start blasting away at the pythons. It would make it easier to rid the Glades of them if you could, but animal rights groups got involved somehow.

 

Don't know if you're permitted to shoot monkeys or not. There was one in St. Pete for a while. Idiots were feeding the wild monkey. They finally darted it and relocated it to Silver Springs IIRC.

 

There are some ridiculous rules for "humanely" killing most invasive species in Florida. 

There is also a saying concerning a shovel and shutting the hell up.

Why are they an endangered species? I know here in Ohio we can shoot varmints or any animal attacking you but we don’t have alligators or monkeys!

They used to be on the endangered species list. I think they revised it to threatened species now.

Monkeys are no problem, .38 or 9mm should be fine.

Huh..and you say we have nasty critters down under...and ya' aint even mentioning yet the , bears, mountain  lions, bobcats, lynx & all manner of things that wanna' eat 'ya...and now there's wild monkeys that are way worse then our drop bears, least we can swat or stand on  spiders .

12 gauge shotgun to the top of the cranium. Their brain is the size of a pea. Most gator are euthanized in this manner after capture. They capture them by "fishing" for them basically.

The reason I opened this thread in the first place wa I thought a group of Wild Bunch action shooters was calling themselves The Florida Monkeys.

The State of Florida, the Florida Wildlife Commision and some quasi-veterinary group.

 

I will note that I've never heard of anyone getting in trouble for killing pythons in other manners, ie - blasting the s*** out of them with a shotgun.

They tend to take killing gators seriously though

So, clobber them Unconscious and then destroy the brain.
If I would encounter an adult python I would clobber its brain with 00 Buckshot. The first pellets would render it unconscious then the remaining pellets, 1-5 milliseconds later would destroy the brain. Easy and humane, in my book.

That was Capstick's problem. He didn't pith it.

 

Peter Hathaway Capstick. He was a professional hunter in Africa, and wrote several books. He also had several articles published in the American rifleman.

 

In one he was telling about killing a crocodile. This giant crocodile had set up shop by this native village. And when the women came down to get water or do laundry or when the children came down to play and swim, he had lunch. So they wanted Capstick to kill the crocodile.

 

He was using his small rifle. 375 H&H. He shot it in the head. Three or four times. He would shoot it, and it would sit there for a moment and then start to walk off so he would shoot it again. By the time he got done shooting it there was very little of the skull left.

 

And the natives thanked him, and then he went on about his business - whatever he was supposed to be doing that day. When he was going back to camp that night he went by the village. The crocodile was still down on the river bank. It had a vulture in its mouth.

 

With his head mostly destroyed by several rounds of 375 Holland and Holland Magnum, when the buzzard tried to eat him, he still had enough umph to catch the buzzard.

 

Obviously what Mr Capstick should have done was gone up there with a 4-inch long #2 Phillips head and stuck it in the brain pan and stirred it around a while. He needed to pith it.

There was a guy here that had several big cats, lions and tigers that he let loose and terrorized the area until they were caught. The dude killed himself!

2 - Grizzlies

3 - Mountain lions

1 - Baboon

18 - Bengal tigers

17 - Lions

A damn shame that the idiot let the animals loose and forced the officers to kill most of them.

 

The owner shot himself less than a month after being released from prison. He had been in prison for possession of "unregistered" guns. I wonder if the guns were Class III type guns? I thought Ohio was gun friendly, does Ohio require gun registration?

I don’t know what they meant by “unregistered guns”. Ohio does not have registration. It would have to have been Class 3 weapons or the writer of the article doesn’t know what he’s talking about! Maybe he was prohibited from owning firearms period!

he was not only unfair to the public around him but also all of those animals that were out of their environment and had to be put down , he saved the taxpayers tho
