Went to the UK a couple of times in the late '70's - English major could speak and write fluent American.  Some funny communication issues!  Quite a learning curve, but easy after the first trip.

One of my nephews married a Scottish lassie.  For the first six or seven years we'd go up to Utah to visit and he'd translate for us.  Now some 25 years later she speaks American better than he does.....unless she gets riled up and then the brogue comes back in spades.
