They were incapacitated by the blast shock waves from their "torpedo" charge. The Hunley then drifted away from their target, the Housatonic. The Housatonic sunk in just a few minutes after the blast. The outgoing tide carried the Hunley eastward into the Atlantic. The skeletons of the crew were found to be in their combat positions in the wreck of the Hunley. Quote
