Yul Lose Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 Some of you may remember me posting about the neighbor kids moving my trash cans for me a couple of weeks ago. Well last week they came by and did it again and refused to be paid. So I told them that I’d make a deal with them to pay them each $20.00 per month to move my cans out to the street on Tuesday and back up to the house on Wednesday. They do all of this on the way home from the school bus stop. I told them to ask their folks to make sure it was okay and today they stopped by and told me their folks said it was okay. The 2 boys on the other hand said that they wouldn’t take any money for it that they just wanted to do it for me and that they really enjoyed me showing them things that I’m building out in the shop. The last visit I showed them how I dovetail my small boxes that I build. I brought them over to the house and introduced them to Mrs. Lose and gave them some ice cream bars that the grandkids left behind at Thanksgiving. Mrs. Lose was very impressed at how polite and well mannered they were. 15 3 Quote

Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 There are still some kids out here that are well behaved, generous, ambitious, respectful...even some who go door to door looking for work. They are looking for work. When was the last time you saw that? 4 Quote
Yul Lose Posted December 18, 2024 Author Posted December 18, 2024 The mother of these 2 young men showed up this afternoon to check things out, what a nice lady she is. We visited for quite awhile and she mentioned the part about me waving at them as they drove by over the years. We live in a pretty rural area and don’t know many neighbors but I have a hunch we’ve found some new friends. The boys are out of school over the Christmas break and they’re going to come over for some more shop time. It’s nice being able to pass some of my knowledge along as my kids and grandkids have no interest in woodworking. 5 3 Quote
Yul Lose Posted December 19, 2024 Author Posted December 19, 2024 These two boys brought the cans up this afternoon and I gave them each a box of Sees candy for Christmas. My wife brought out a bottle of Gatorade for both of them too. I told them not to worry about the cans next week as there would be a delay of one day because of Christmas and they assured me that they’d take care of the cans even though it was going to be Christmas Day. They said that their family didn't have any travel plans and no company visiting so they’d be looking for something to do. We’ve lived here for 34 years and have never had something like these 2 young men come along. I’ve waved at a bunch of kids as they’ve walked by coming from the school bus stop over the years and I can’t remember more than one or two of them even acknowledging me. I am truly impressed with these two young men, as you all can probably tell. Hope you don’t mind me sharing this experience. 4 2 Quote

watab kid Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 this is refreshing to hear , ive mentioned before that ive asked grandkids to join me in SASS and no interest has been displayed ---the guns i bought are ones i like and will keep ------but they have displayed interest in pother healthy things , volleyball , tennis , hockey , art and such , im ok with that , we all have different interests , gotta let them make their way , im pleased to hear these two are interested in your craftsmanship , something you can teach them , but not something you can force on a kid , good thing they are interested - teach them well , we need great craftsman 3 Quote
Rip Snorter Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 Though my kids were interested in martial arts and shooting (and continue practice as adults) , had they not been, I would have trained them to basic competence. The world is not a safe place for sheeple. 3 Quote
