Built by Bill "Maverick" Golden, the "Little Red Wagon" was a 1965 Dodge A100 pickup that wasn't just any drag racer—it was a wheel-stander, known for blasting down the quarter-mile with its nose pointed to the sky.

Initially, the A100 was built as a mid-engine truck for drag racing, powered by a monstrous 426 Hemi V8. But during testing, it revealed its true star power by popping up into a wheelie that stretched the length of the track.

Golden quickly realized that this accident was pure gold, and he turned the "Little Red Wagon" into a performance phenomenon, touring drag strips nationwide. Fans would come from miles around just to see it lift up and scream down the strip on its rear wheels.

The "Little Red Wagon" was more than just a showpiece; it set records, including being the first wheel-stander to run the quarter-mile in under 11 seconds.

It became an unforgettable part of drag racing history, showcasing that sometimes, the most thrilling rides come from unexpected places. Even today, the sight of that iconic red pickup, nose high in the air, brings a wave of nostalgia for those who watched it conquer drag strips in its glory days.

This is what I was thinking of. I knew it sounded familiar, but not quite.

Little red express truck

I guess if you put the engine in the bed you don't really need a hood.

But this doesn't look like a pickup truck to me. It looks like a chopped van.

All three major manufacturers built snub nosed pickups in the sixties.  Ford built theirs out of the Ecocoline. Dodge, the Chrysler Corp. truck line, built theirs from their Tradesman van, and Chevrolet built the Greebrier from its Corvair line producing both vans and pickups.

I was fortunate enough to see it in action at National Trails Raceway near Columbus, OH. It was probably in the 70's. I had a couple of buddies who were drag racers and I was part of their unofficial "pit crew" and traveled with them. I have pictures of it in action somewhere buried in boxes of slides and pictures. I'll see if I can dig some out.
