BPCR for long range

I am looking to pick up a high wall in 38-55. My question is what twist? The Pedersoli comes in either a 1:18 or a 1:12. What are the pros and cons? Most of my shooting would be in the 200 yard range but I might want to go shoot a silhouette match on the other side of Atlanta sometimes and the 1:12 twist will give me that ability. Anyone near Lagrange can show a newby the ropes?

I have a 38-50 REM Hepburn, based on the 30-40 Krag case, 2.25”.  50-52 ffg Goex, 55 gr Goex OE, compression around .1-.2”, 1200-1300 fps

 

I have a 12 twist barrel that lets me employee 365 gr bullet. 
 

If you go with the 18 twist, it will let you light bullets/hunting bullets only. A 14 twist is common for BPCR for 38-55.

Go with the 12 twist.

I have a UbertiWin HiWall in 38-55. 1-18 twist. Heaviest bullet it would handle was 310 grn, but was not overly accurate. I could hit the Rams at 500 meters with a 260 grn, but not reliably knock them off rail. 
 

I’d  go with the 1-12 twist. More bullet options!

The 12 twist Pedersoli is a great choice. Put the best sights you can get. I prefer MVA. My shooting partner used a 375 Paul Jones bullet and did very well for years.

@Uriah, SASS # 53822, color me jealous.  A 38-50 Hepburn is on my list of To Get guns.

FAster twist is always better.  My research on "over stabilization" of bullets has not yielded any proof that an over stabilized ( faster rotation than needed for bullet length) has any negative effect on accuracy against paper and steel.  It might negatively impact terminal ballistics on meat but I have not chased that done yet.

I have been told that the heavier the bullet the faster twist you need. So the question is what bullet are you planning on shooting?

I have a Uberti 1885 I reload a 335 grain head with as much 777 as I can get the case to hold. They seem to work well enough for my daughter to hit the target out to 300 yards(the farthest she has shot yet).

If you go to the Quigley, during one of the early practice day, when the line is relatively quiet, you can hear the bullets that are unstable. The bucket, down on the end, is the best way to hear it. I guess the fired at target would be number two or three, judging from the time of flight. 
 

They go: Wow, wow, wow, wow

 

And they usually hit!

I tried 335 grn bullets in my Uberti HiWall. Sounded like bees downrange
