Cholla Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 (edited) What? Seven hours have gone by, and there are NO posts about Trail Boss being overrated? There are no comments about how nobody really needs this powder and there are better powders out there? I bet this could go three pages with very little effort. 😂 Edited December 9, 2024 by Cholla 2 9 Quote

H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 Oh man! I sure hope it's available here in the US soon! I DO so miss this stuff. It's a great powder. I use for everything from .32 S&W to .45-70 and 56-60 Spencer. 1 Quote

This map only shows New England, New York, Pennsylvania and the mountains of the West covered by snow. I find TB useful for some rifle loads. Hells Comin Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 Cholla I would like to help with your prediction. Trail boss is that a new category? Hells Comin 6 Quote
Springfield Slim SASS #24733 Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 I traded a 1 lb bottle of Titegroup for a 9 oz container of TB last month. Hopefully that will get me through until TB gets back in the US. Quote

I don't know about that. When I used to live in Ohio, my backyard was full of clay in the soil. Never thought of using it to load ammo though. I was afraid it'll all be squib loads.😝🤣 2 Quote

Major Crimes Posted December 10, 2024 Author Posted December 10, 2024 Just spoke to my LGS. He had four bottles (gone in a heart beat). He has put me on back ordr and said there would be more on the way. They are $340 AUD ($218 USD) for 1.5kg (3.3 lb). That's more than double what they were before they stopped production 😪 1 1 Quote

Overrated, need and better are all subjective terms, and do little except make those basing decisions on such ill-defined terms, basically feel good. Are there more efficient powders? Well, yes... obviously, if... by more efficient, one means using less of a product to produce a similar result. The one area that this powder falls flat is in its cost effectiveness. Unless the economics of its use has changed since I first looked at it, then it's not very cost effective. One pays more (at best about the same) for a can, gets less product in that can, and uses more of the product on a unit for unit basis, yielding less finished ammo per $ spent. I don't feel that endlessly repeating myself is particularly useful. It's like trying to have a meaningful dialog w/a bunch of s. 'Sides it's well known that simplest way to load is with the Original Gun Powder, not fake stuff. But, since NOT being a member of the KaBoom Club is priceless... everyone must measure all of the above against their ability to load compliant, reliable, safe ammo. Emphasis added on most important characteristic. On 12/9/2024 at 10:09 AM, Springfield Slim SASS #24733 said: I traded a 1 lb bottle of Titegroup for a 9 oz container of TB last month. I could use that spot for a 1 pound can of something I'd actually use (as it's back full again)! Quote
Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933 Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 Well hell I have been cleaning out some cabinets trying to downsize and get rid of stuff I have not used in years. Look what I found way in the back. (Also found four one pound containers of Red Dot.) The Clays are unopened. The Trail Boss is filled to the brim which means I dumped a partial bottle into this one so it is over the normal 9 ounces. 5 Quote

Dapper Dave Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 I have never used Trail Boss, don't have any in my stash - so why is it so highly rated for CAS? NOT trying to start a war, seriously asking. I use AA#2 and ZIP right now for handgun loads. Quote

It is VERY bulky and fills black powder designed cases like 45 colt up and produces very low velocities. 1 Quote

It does not work well with real light loads and those who tried to do that did not like it. 1 Quote
Dapper Dave Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 Oh, like 700X? I don't like fluffy flake powders that meter poorly in my Uniflow, sounds like it would not work well for me. More for everyone else, hope it comes back to the US soon. Quote

Trail Boss powder is shaped in donuts to take up space. Subsonic shooters covent it for 300 Blackout and other subsonic cartridges. 3 Quote
