My daughter just dropped in for a surprise visit for my birthday. During Thanksgiving her and my SIL and grandson were in Hawaii. She texted me a picture of these macadamia nuts while they were there and asked me if I’d like to try them because she knows I like Spam. When I opened the can I could definitely smell the Spam smell and then there was a subtle Spam taste when I tried a few.

Macadamia trees are Australian and were imported into Hawaii.

It is always tickled me how garbage food - trash that was fed to either the lower classes or to animals - has now become expensive and "oh boy we really want that".

In the 1700s they passed the law in Massachusetts that you could not feed your indentured servants lobster more than 3 days a week. Because lobster was trash fish. And now look at it.

Before the War of 1861, the owners ate certain parts of the animal and certain parts of the vegetable, and they fed what was left over - the stuff they would not eat - to the slaves. Hog jowl. Pig's feet. Turnip tops. Chicken wings. Cow peas. Now this stuff is soul food, and can cost you a pretty penny at a restaurant.

In Texas in the late 1800s and early 1900s they gave the workers flank steak. One of, if not the, toughest cuts of meat on the cow. And the workers came up with something to make this hunk of shoe leather edible. Fajitas. Then fajitas got popular. Now flank steak costs more than sirloin.

In Hawaii they grew macadamia nuts. They fed them to the cows. They were not people food. They were certainly not high dollar ritzy people food. It was cattle feed.

Yes, but slowly.  Every 100 ounce single serving of those highly addictive nuggets is known to contain 200 ounces of fat.

That said,  Spam Flavored Macadamia Nuts sounds pretty good.

Other examples are "baby back ribs," which used to be trim that butchers almost couldn't give away.   Salt pork,  used to be dirt cheap because it was made from trim and used for the cheapest of military rations or for seasoning.  Bacon was just a  small step up from that.   I looked at some salt pork in the "managers special" section and it was marked down to $6.49/#.  Pork picnic shoulder I ove $4.50/# around here.

I find macadamia nuts to be mostly flavorless on their own. Spam is a VERY popular food in Hawaii!

Kinda’ makes sense!!

Fat, salt, crunch, and porky goodness all is one tiny nugget!  How could you not like it?

We live not too far from Austin,Minnesota...the home of SPAM. They even have a SPAM museum there. Have been to it several times. They have SPAM for sale that you can't find. SOme is special runs for export...some is for certain regions. I need to go back again and see what different varieties they have.

Mrs. Lose took a trip to Europe a few years ago and since she won’t allow SPAM in the house I tried a number of different flavors while she was gone and the Jalapeño SPAM is my favorite. She hasn’t said anything about the macadamia nuts yet,

What's the difference between tocino and bacon? I see it comes in both flavors. I looked up tocino and according to the all-knowing Internet it's just the Spanish word for bacon.

Tocino is usually somewhat sweet and/or savory and not smoked.  It also is much fattier than bacon,  more akin to salo (see Viands and Victuals) than American bacon.

Add Brisket to that list as well. One upon a time it was considered a less than desirable cut.

Then along came competition BBQ and making it edible became the test of a master BBQ cook. Now it costs more per pound that a good steak.
