Bailey Creek,5759
My Brother has decided to go with Promo Powder. Does anyone have a good load for Shotgun and 45 Colt?
SHOOTIN FOX
4.5 grains of Promo under a 200 gr RNFP. Don’t use it in shotgun. I do not use it in shotgun. Not saying don’t. Edited December 8, 2024 by SHOOTIN FOX
Cold Lake Kid, SASS # 51474
Why do you advise not to use it in shotgun?
Choctaw Jack
~ 13.4 grains (mec #22 bushing) of Promo, Claybuster pink (CBO175-12 )wad, 3/4 ounce of #7 1/2 or #8 shot, your choice of #209 primers in a red or grey AA Winchester hull. Less recoil than the Winchester LNLR loading.
Sedalia Dave
From Alliant's website Quote PROMO Smokeless shotshell powder America's number one economy-priced 12 gauge target powder. Promo has the same burn speed as Red Dot, but is more dense, thus requiring a smaller bushing to obtain the same charge weight. Budget priced Economical trap, skeet and sporting clay loads Easy metering and consistent charging Principal Purpose: Light and standard 12 ga target loads. Secondary Uses: Handgun loads Remarks: Reliable performance shot after shot. Standard charge weights work great. 1
Gateway Kid SASS# 70038 Life
Shouldn’t use for shotgun? Just asking but I thought Promo was a generic (cheaper) version of Red Dot, which is a decent powder for a lot of stuff, and has literally 100 listed loads for 7/8 - 1 1/8 shotgun loads on the Alliant website. Did I misunderstand something? Regards Gateway Kid
bgavin
I'm told Red Dot is now OOP and replaced by Promo. On paper, Red Dot had some really great loads for revolvers. I'm also told that Power Pistol is the replacement for Unique which is also OOP. Both are modern upgrades for the powders they replace.

Neither Red Dot or Unique are out of production. All of Alliants production resources are currently dedicated to a large military contract. Until the government's needs are satisfied Alliant will not be producing powder for sale to the public.
bgavin
I got it 2nd hand from a guy who spoke to an Alliant rep. So just hearsay, until published in print.

Meant to say I do not use it in shotgun. Promo is a shotgun powder. I use 700 x as I have used it for years and have a adequate supply.
