Blackwater 53393
It’s important to remember that the name “COWBOY” was originally used as an epithet. That’s right!! “COWBOY” was a very derogatory name used when referring to nearly anyone who tended cattle. There are other names that are used by teams and schools all over that have adopted names that were once considered degrading to those that the names referred to. Names like “Sooners” ,“Jayhawks”, even “Irish” were spat at those whose nationality or birthplace was looked down upon!! And the people who were called those names stood straight and strong and those names became badges of pride and honor!! To try to erase history and to cancel whole groups and cultures of people from history and memory is a disservice and a disgrace!! I have said this before and I gladly and loudly repeat it now! THERE’S A VAST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN “WOKE” AND AWAKENED!! 5

Rye Miles #13621
The Cleveland Indians name while not exactly named after Louis Socelexis, the first Native American ball player, it was certainly inspired by him. There was a survey urging people to send in names for the team. The Cleveland Indians won. For over 100 yrs that named stood until the “woke” mob pressured the woke owners to changing the name. First they got rid of the cartoonish Chief Wahoo then the name. Sad. 😔 The Chief on the right was the first one. I don't think that the owners who allowed the name changes are necessarily "woke." I think that pressure from the woke strongarm racketeers (Nice organization you go there, be a real shame if every game caused riots and lawsuits) and the spineless governing bodies, i.e. Corporate MLB and NFL also caving to the mobocracy that forced their hands.

Well the story is that MLB said Cleveland could have the All Star game in 2019 if they got rid of Chief Wahoo. So yes it’s more about money but I believe these owners are “woke” also. They said it was time to get rid of Wahoo and later they changed the name! There could have been some pressure from MLB I’m sure. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleveland_Indians_name_and_logo_controversy Edited December 1 by Rye Miles #13621

I have to add one name to Blackwater's list- " Okie" During the Depression of 1930s, compounded by the Dust Bowl conditions, large numbers of residents of Oklahoma ( and Texas, Kansas and other affected states)moved en mass to California. The term " Okie" soon gained a derogatory connotation, referring to a lower class of people, or those who didn't belong . Being a proud Oklahoman, I've always interpreted the term as being one who is tough, resilient, adaptive, and someone who perseveres. Just my not-so-humble opinion. Choctaw Jack Like I said, there are many “nicknames” that were, (and some are still) derogatory or demeaning! Those who were called such names and overcame the stigma mostly kept the diminutive as a badge of honor!! My paternal grandparents were both German immigrants. They and their children were called Krauts and Gerries for the better part of the early twentieth century! I wear the Kraut label with pride! I take it to mean that, by birth, I’m naturally gifted with excellent mechanical skills and attention to detail! It ain’t necessarily so. It’s probably NOT as hereditary as some would have you believe, but I know four generations of my family have exhibited those traits. While my dad was harassed and treated badly in school, my grandfather was working on the Manhattan Project! SO!! Like the line in the old western goes when one guy calls another a less than complementary name, “YA BETTER SMILE WHEN YOU SAY THAT!” 3

John Kloehr
Wokeism did not stop with creating programs or removing certain images, instead those responses became wedges to go for even more. Like with gun control, an inch is an opportunity for a mile. For all of these things, they are like a pie. And the woke claim to only want one slice of it. Then they want another and another. Finally you only have one slice left and they want to take it too. Enough! Folks want their whole damn pie back! Redskin's name coming back, Aunt Jemima is back, Uncle Ben is back, and the butter girl needs her land back. None of these symbols were discriminatory IMO. They were and are all in complimentary. 2

Capt. James H. Callahan
I went to McMurry college in Abilene. We were the Indians. For homecoming they used to set up a whole teepee village, dressed like Indians etc. When I was a kid even it was a big deal, they would take us on field trip McMurrry and even learned something about the Comanche and tribes from this area. Then the NCAA got the WOKE cob up their @$$ and made us change our name. No more teepee village. Now we are the Warhawks. I got something for the NCAA! Like people calling youvm "Pat" or me "Joe." that is exactly my thinking on the topic , what might have been slang of the time has become common ...then all of a sudden taboo , much of it with no ill intent but simply speak of those times , there are also dialect items of certain areas - didnt know this as an 18 year old raised in a household without prejudice , but i learned it as i moved around the country , even here in that land of "minnesota nice" , i learned some new things , you take them in stride and accept/reject as need be , i say i was raised without prejudice for two reasons - first - because my family moved north from the south and yes , my grandparents had some southern tendency and attitudes , but my parents always corrected those comments to us kids - they did not allow any racist comments to go undiscussed and corrected , second - because my father served in the pacific , he bombed japan , but when he came home he harbored no resentment to the japanese people - we were taught growing up they were not responsible for what their government did , i had an adopted war bride japanese aunt who treated me like her own kin , she was very good to me as a child , ill add that i married a woman that was rais4ed in japan shortly after she was born in pearl harbor till she was in high school - dad was career navy submariner , 1
