Only in some states.

It's funny how if you watch television or movies you know - you KNOW - that the age of consent is 18. If you have sex with someone under 18 (actually it seems to only be if you have sex with a girl under 18. Nobody gives the damn if a 15 year old boy is having sex with an older woman) they will arrest you for statutory rape.

There was a movie, back in 62. Gypsy. Based on Gypsy Rose Lee's autobiography. Rose was a stereotypical stage mother. And she wanted her beautiful little blonde daughter, June, to become a star. And June finally got fed up and ran away with one of the dancers from the show. They were out west somewhere at the time - Nevada I think. And Rose calls the law. "I want you to arrest that boy and bring my darling baby daughter back!!!"

And the sheriff asks her how old June is, and is told that "she is only 14!!"

And he puts his notebook back in his pocket and tells her that "this is still a frontier state, and the age of consent is 12".

The age of consent varies from state to state, the lowest age of consent is now 16 years of age and that is true of several states!

28 states.  I recall that not too long ago (20 years?) some states had a split age of consent.  Something like 18 for males and 16 for females.

Personal opinion here - should be 16 across the boards.  That would keep high school sweethearts from being felons.  Or at least have "Romeo and Juliet Laws" so that as long as the 2 minors are consenting, or there is only a specified age difference between an adult and minor,  e g. 5 years, it's legal.

When I was 18 I met a girl that seemed very interested in me and I was very interested in her. Her house was just down the block from my boarding house.
One day I asked her, Nancy, out to dinner and a movie. She excitedly agreed, but said “I have an errand to run before dinner. Can I meet you at the restaurant?”

I agreed.

That evening I waited at the restaurant for 30 minutes. Nancy didn’t show so I headed home.
Shortly after getting home there was a knock at the door. I was closest so I answered it.
The guy at the door introduced himself as Nancy’s older brother. He asked me if we could talk. I grabbed my jacket and stepped outside prepared for a fight or at least some confrontation.
There was none of that.
He explained that Nancy was not 18, as I was led to believe. She was 15 and her birthday was just “last month”.

She did not look or act 14/15 years old.
Her brother told me this because he figured she had reeled me in with her flirtatious  way and dynamite looks. He said his Dad sent him to talk to me to let me know I was playing with fire.

Apparently Nancy’s Dad caught her sneaking out and she spilled the beans about the date when questioned.
Needless to say I lost all interest in Nancy that night.
I am pretty sure that in Pennsylvania back then 15 might have gotten me 20.

It's been a lot of years since I had any need to know and enforce this, but it seems that way back then, if two 16 year olds decided to "get busy" no law was broken, but if it was a 16 year old and a 17 year old somebody was going to jail.  I don't know if the laws have been tweaked since then.

Age of consent in Ky and Al is 16, the same as it is in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and twenty-three other states.

Only nineteen states have a higher age of consent.

Although not originally written by Ringo Starr, he recorded this song in 1973 which became the number one in the US. He was 33 at the time.

Play "You're Sixteen (Y…"
on Amazon Music Unlimited (ad)

"You're Sixteen (You're Beautiful And You're Mine)"

Ho!

You come on like a dream, peaches and cream,
Lips like strawberry wine.
You're sixteen, you're beautiful and you're mine. (mine, all mine)

You're all ribbons and curls, ooh, what a girl,
Eyes that sparkle and shine.
You're sixteen, you're beautiful and you're mine.
(mine, all mine, mine, mine)

You're my baby, you're my pet,
We fell in love on the night we met.
You touched my hand, my heart went pop,
Ooh, when we kissed, i could not stop.

You walked out of my dreams, into my arms,
Now you're my angel divine.
You're sixteen, you're beautiful, and you're mine.

You're my baby, you're my pet,
We fell in love on the night we met.
You touched my hand, my heart went pop,
Ooh, when we kissed, i could not stop.

You walked out of my dreams, into my car,
Now you're my angel divine.
You're sixteen, you're beautiful, and you're mine.

You're sixteen, you're beautiful, and you're mine.

You're sixteen, you're beautiful, and you're mine.

All mine, all mine, all mine.

All mine, all mine, all mine.

All mine, all mine, all mine, all mine, but i do.

You are mine!

Appropriate…

When I was in the Navy it was well known not to fool with underage girls in the USA or elsewhere. Leavenworth never looks good any time of year, from what I was told. ;)

I don’t know about you Pards, but I can’t stand being around young woman and girls for more than 2, maybe 3 seconds.

Rock and roll was not written for grown up people. It was not written for the 20s and the 30s and the 40 year olds. It's written for teenagers.

So they're going to make a song - "you're 26, you're beautiful and you're mine"? Why would a teenager be interested in a song about a 26-year-old? To a 15 year old kid, 26 is ancient.

So Ringo sang about "you're 16 you're beautiful". Sam Cooke sang about "she was only 16". "16 candles in my heart will glow, for ever and ever cuz I love you so".

Taking this thread slightly sideways

Age of consent, to me, means that you are old enough to decide to have sex.

So if you are under the age of consent, could your parents tell you it was all right? Could they give you permission, in which case the boy would not be breaking any law?

It seems like it would be like signing a contract. If you're under 18, you're not old enough to sign a contract. But your parent can sign the contract for you.

So if you're under the age of consent - 16, 17, 18, whatever it is where you live - you're not old enough to decide to have sex. Could your parent allow it? Legally?

I can visualize that in court. The prosecutor says, "Did you have sex with that 14-year-old girl?", and the defendant says, "Yes I did, but her parents gave me permission!"

And the judge says, "Case dismissed". :P

Not quite that simple. If the court agrees to a petition to emancipation, the minor becomes an adult under the law. At least in theory, this removes any limitation on age of consent.

The only other way I know is by marriage. For a minor, this requires parental permission, judicial approval, or both, depending on the state. But a parent can not simply waive the legal prohibition.

My wife was only seventeen when we eloped.   I was 23.  She turned 18 about 48 days later.  I don't recall anyone asking how old she was.

Pat, I am at that point myself, but my wife was a very mature, in every way, woman.  She turned 20 a month before I became a Company Commander and became "The Commander's Lady", and a surrogate mother to some of the younger soldiers.  Together we faced a lot of demons in our life, but stood shoulder to shoulder and beat them down.

We were married 51 years before she passed.  I guess I still am married.
