Stoeger Shotgun play at the breach

Make do

Recommended Posts

I have a coach gun with what I think is too much play at the breach. I have taken it apart and taken pictures of the parts. So I have a number of questions in order.

 1. Is there too much play based on the breach picture?

2. Which of the parts are at fault and how to correct them?

3. Helpful hints on how to get it together, hammers are being resistive along with the trigger springs I am not sure how to get them in and which pin they go on. A parts diagram would also be helpful IMG_0330.thumb.JPG.bf57846fa913b6fa806542c1997cad6a.JPGIMG_0323.thumb.JPG.18953767f4fd0ddfafa625bb36173ecd.JPGIMG_0324.thumb.JPG.77a3d2875d16ff0d7b43572558b74b75.JPGIMG_0325.thumb.JPG.183c1fa32ca2f06dbbc1463f717e3ace.JPGIMG_0326.thumb.JPG.e59171e35e0fafa34d567aff6b37f4b8.JPGIMG_0327.thumb.JPG.fc3f01b70ee1de5a034433805e458e7b.JPGldn't find on the internet any videos on assembly.

Yes.

Hard to tell without seeing and measuring the parts.

Trying to replace the hammers with the stock springs can take three hands.  I have a tool I made for the job that basically sits on the sear surface of the hammer so you can push it in.  You need a good padded vise.  In all candor if you do not know how to get them in and do not know which pin they go on I suggest you take it to a gunsmith that is familiar with Stoegers.  There are seveal parts diagrams on the Internet.  Do a search.  You can look at Numrich Arms under Boito and see a diagram.

Thanks for the advice - got it put together - suggestions as to who to send it to or will the cost outweigh upgrading to a new shotgun?

A lot of the people I know who use to do this work are retired.  If you shoot at a local club see who they use locally.  There is a thread going on right now where people are picking up the base model Stoegers for under $300.00.

Randy, I just checked Academy and the only Stoeger coach guns come with a synthetic stock.  I thought that synthetic stocks were not allowed in Cowboy action?

Yeah...think the wording is "simulated"...originally thought the synthetic stock was to have molded in wood grain but I was wrong.

Oh well...no skin off my teeth.

Very ugly, but legal and a cheap way to get someone started.

I originally thought the same thing and I think that was the case when I started. Here’s a reply from PaleWolf on another thread asking about it. This was the second time PaleWolf replied on this thread.

Thanks

Randy

One more time:

Current (2024) SHB reference:

" Grips or stocks of simulated or natural materials are acceptable provided they are not customized to constitute a “target” grip or stock. That is, they must be of the same basic shape as grips or stocks found on original firearms."

SHB p.34

"Stocks" were added to that allowance in 2009.

The ROC specifically addressed and approved them in regard to Stoeger (Boito) nickel-plated shotguns in 2007.

Also:

"Replacement parts may be made from materials other than the original unless such material is specifically prohibited."

SHB p.32

Of course if you removed the word "simulated", synthetic stock would not be acceptable.

So, add in the word "simulated" back and you get this: " Grips or stocks of simulated (def of simulated: manufactured in imitation of some other material) or natural materials are acceptable provided they are not customized to constitute a “target” grip or stock. That is, they must be of the same basic shape as grips or stocks found on original firearms.

Well...guess "they" should change the wording a bit.

I don’t know but I expect the wording is exactly what they wanted.

I see: the front hook was obviously ground away at the locking surface and its safety function was disabled. Very dangerous.

Hi - nope I haven't done any work of the gun other than changing the safety. I notice in my picture the front lug slants downward whereas your picture it is a lot squarer with only a slight slanting downward. Maybe my memory was faulty, and it was used (I bought it about 25 years ago) and the previous owner took a grinder to it. It looks like I should try welding it up and regrinding the lug. Thanks for the picture

Can you then explain how a plain, black synthetic stock is allowed based on the rule?

Hi - I was hoping to get some help with the problem I am having with lock up - The black synthetic stock probably won't help just as I think a wood one won't help.

I apologize that my reply caused your thread to be totally hijacked!  It was intended to show that you could buy a new base Stoeger  probably about as cheap as the repairs.

Sorry

Randy
