My grandson has a musical interest. Where did that gene come from?

He’s taking lessons for guitar and cello. Did ukulele for a couple years as a prelude to guitar. Tried piano and violin before settling on guitar and cello. Let mom buy the pricey instruments.  ))) She won’t go bargain basement.

I get to buy the oddball things. Last year it was an otomatone.  This year he asked for an electric kazoo. Seems easy and low budget,  tips appreciated about what to get or avoid.

Thinking about something to add to his noisemakers, I found a Kalimba. It looks like it could be fun. I’d like tips here too.

Check out Reverb.com for used instruments.  I like Sweetwater for new stuff.  if you are buying a lot of different   instruments and music gear, you will get hooked up with a tech who works with you for all of you purchases.

How about a Glockenspiel or a Xylophone ? Fun instruments.

I played a Vibraphone which is much larger and has a sustain pedal. Example: Lionel Hampton.

My brothers interests were drums and the accordion. My parents had no idea what they were getting into.
Made my desire for guitar and electric bass much easier to convince them to support.

I was formally trained from age 5 by a concert pianist.
As a result, I "see" in piano and can play many different instruments.

As an entertainer, one has the ability to speak or sing, which is denied the horn players.

I like that Kalimba idea.

Also, what about an inexpensive mandolin?

I understand.  You can see his cello case on the picture. He, so far, has decided to play piano, guitar, and cello.  He is taking lessons in each. First piano teacher suggested he move on to a better teacher, one he had to qualify for. She said he might have perfect pitch. daughter said, “where’d he get that gene?”

im glad he was wearing hearing protection when brother was playing drums.

Stick with guitar,  chick's won't look at a guy playing kazoo or kimbila or whatever crap that is.....also

If you get him a jews harp or harmonica, you gonna have to get him kickboxing for ju jitsu lessons as well....don't get the kid beat up. Don't let some of these old codgers give ya bad advice, this is not the 50s.

 ......... oh, musical instrument, ........ I was thinking of a good-ish, not-to-expensive multimeter.   😉

Well that was a Fluke 🤣

The weekend piano player at a local restaurant is quite talented and sometimes accompanies other musicians on this type of Air Piano keyboard. He can make it sound pretty good.

Marshal, definitely keep encouraging the lad and nurturing his talents!  He'll get a lifetime of enjoyment out of it.  Heck - so will you!  ^_^

When Sassparilla Kid was in fourth grade he announced that he wanted to join his school's fledgling band.  So, we got 'im a Getzen student trumpet, and it was Game On.

When he was twelve, he discovered Blues.  By the time he was in high school you could barely walk through our li'l bungalow for all the music stuff ~ three trumpets (including an upgrade to a professional Getzen Eterna with a silver bell), one cornet, two bugles, one piano, two electronic keyboards, two banjos, one mandolin, and one "banjolele" (with eternal thanks to Forty Rod!).

Also, seven assorted acoustic and electric guitars (including a Strat he built himself), multiple amps, an old Ibanez he restored, a replica '59 Fender Bassman speaker cabinet he built when he was fourteen (with original Bassman speakers), a variety of harmonicas, a practice bagpipe chanter or two, and a kazoo.  😊

If ya had a hammer maybe ya should tried playin' a dulcimer. ;)

Back in the early to mid-70's, the inhabitants of the Green, White, and Pink houses had a number of musicians among our group of friends who were quite proficient with various instruments...including autoharps and zithers.

This is a great starter and if he likes it he can step up to a more sophisticated model. This shown is in the key of C so you’re limited to that key but there’s a plethora of these. Fun instrument!
