Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 (edited) My grandson has a musical interest. Where did that gene come from? He’s taking lessons for guitar and cello. Did ukulele for a couple years as a prelude to guitar. Tried piano and violin before settling on guitar and cello. Let mom buy the pricey instruments. ))) She won’t go bargain basement. I get to buy the oddball things. Last year it was an otomatone. This year he asked for an electric kazoo. Seems easy and low budget, tips appreciated about what to get or avoid. Thinking about something to add to his noisemakers, I found a Kalimba. It looks like it could be fun. I’d like tips here too. Edited November 12, 2024 by Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 3 Quote

Sarge Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Check out Reverb.com for used instruments. I like Sweetwater for new stuff. if you are buying a lot of different instruments and music gear, you will get hooked up with a tech who works with you for all of you purchases. 2 Quote
Subdeacon Joe Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 This is going to sound weird, but get him a Jews Harp. 1 1 Quote
Rye Miles #13621 Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 How about a Glockenspiel or a Xylophone ? Fun instruments. I played a Vibraphone which is much larger and has a sustain pedal. Example: Lionel Hampton. 1 Quote
Gateway Kid SASS# 70038 Life Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 My brothers interests were drums and the accordion. My parents had no idea what they were getting into. Made my desire for guitar and electric bass much easier to convince them to support. Regards Gateway Kid 3 Quote

bgavin Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 I was formally trained from age 5 by a concert pianist. As a result, I "see" in piano and can play many different instruments. As an entertainer, one has the ability to speak or sing, which is denied the horn players. Quote
Pat Riot Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 I like that Kalimba idea. Also, what about an inexpensive mandolin? Quote
Pat Riot Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 Amazon has Kalimbas at $25 and rated 4.8 stars with thousands of reviews. There is one for $15. https://a.co/d/3yxNs30 1 Quote
