Alpo Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 Did you choose? Did your spouse choose? Or was no specific date chosen - it just happened to be that day? That was the only date the preacher had open? I chose. I told my wife if she wanted me to remember our anniversary we needed to get married on a date I could remember. We got married on D-Day. I suspect my brother chose. It would seem a wild coincidence if my brother, a Marine, just accidentally got married on November 10th. I figure he chose that date so he could remember. My daughter told me that she got married on Valentine's Day because she wanted her husband to remember their anniversary. There are people that get married on one or the other of them's birthday. Get married on any holiday. 2 Quote
Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 (edited) I did. I was going into the Army in a couple of weeks and told her it was now or never. She ran in the house, came out wearing a blue dress that she had borrowed from her sister (something borrowed, something blue - 2 at the same time), a jeweled pin that had been her grandmother's (something old) and a Ruger Bearcat that I had given her a week before (something new)....total elapsed time was less than 20 minutes....and we drove to downtown Ogden and got married by Justice of the Peace...just 20 minutes before he was leaving for the day $12.50 (I still have the receipt) + two bucks apiece for two ladies I Shanghied off the elevator to be witnesses. Alpo Posted November 10, 2024 Author Posted November 10, 2024 (edited) I used to tell people, just to get their reaction. It was easy for my parents to remember their anniversary. They got married on my brother's birthday. And they did. They got married in 52, and he was born in 54, but it was still March 22nd. For their second anniversary my father gave my mother a brand new Oldsmobile Delta 88. And my mother gave my father a son. I think she got the better deal. Edited November 10, 2024 by Alpo 1 2 Quote
Dr. Zook Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 My wife & I chose the date April (too Many bad memories in March - married Ex #1, Married wife #2 and she passed away 4 days before our 14th anniversary). Now for something much more positive: My grandparents chose their wedding day 1 day after grandmom turned 21 (GM B-day 25th, G-parents anniversary 26th, grandson (me) 27th - 34 years later). 😁 1 Quote

DocWard Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 We both did. November 17, 1990. We decided we would get married when we would have a week's break in college so we could go on a honeymoon. Saddam Hussein and Uncle Sam decided honeymoon's aren't really that important. 1 Quote

Big Sage, SASS #49891 Life Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 We were engaged (I was 22 she was 21) and I got my Draft notice. I was to report December 9, 1963. We discussed the situation and she wanted to stay with October 20, 1964. October 20th has a lot of significance for both our families. It was my Grandfather's and G Grandfather's birthday for my family. It was also her birthday and her Grandparents 50th Wedding Anniversary for her family. So it was the 20th of October for our wedding....also my birthday is the 29th of October so it is a special month for both of us. Last October we celebrated our 60th anniversary. No I never forget the date!!! 3 1 Quote
Subdeacon Joe Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 "How can we easily let all our friends know?" We were both very active in the SCA. Almost all our friends were involved in it. Picked a major event around when we wanted to do it, had the wedding done by a rent a minister in our front yard, fed everyone, and made it down to Palo Alto for evening court. Just happened to also be May 5th. 1 Quote

Pat Riot Posted November 11, 2024 Posted November 11, 2024 The Navy helped us choose. We had planned on being married on March 22nd. My wife had everything set up, but for some reason the Navy decided to keep me at Great Lakes a while longer. So, everything got moved to April 12th and I only had a couple of days before wedding. We were married. Our “Honeymoon” was one night in a Quality Inn motel and the next day we flew to Minnesota so I could start “C” school on Monday for Mk 26 GMLS (guided missile launching systems) I was 19. My wife was 20. We have had a 44 year honeymoon. 5 1 Quote

Gateway Kid SASS# 70038 Life Posted Thursday at 06:32 PM Posted Thursday at 06:32 PM Actual date was September 6, 1982, Labor Day Monday. I had just moved in with her over the weekend and we decided that we didn’t have anything better to do so we went to the courthouse to get married. Of course they were closed but the justice of the peace was there doing paperwork so said no problem. Our best friends were there for witnesses. Thought I was so clever about using Labor Day (so I could remember) until it was pointed out that date changed every year! We just celebrate our anniversary on the Monday of Labor Day weekend regardless of date, since that Monday has been the sixth only five times in 42 years! Whewww, dodged a bullet there! Regards Gateway Kid PS we renewed our vows in 2012 with our bible study leader presiding at the back of our property beside the Colorado river. That wasn’t the sixth either! 4 Quote

Dapper Dave Posted yesterday at 07:43 AM Posted yesterday at 07:43 AM The wife said, "we need to get married soon, as you did ask and I did say yes." "OK, when?" "I'll get the minister over here next weekend." And like that. Sky pilot, mother-in-law and sister-in-law as witnesses, married in the kitchen, me in uniform so I could go to work. No gown, no reception, no honeymoon, no cake, nothing. See, I had all that last time, and I spent 23 years in wedded hell, so the trappings made no difference whatsoever. Was the date significant? Mope, just a day in March. However, I am semi sneaky, so I proudly framed our wedding certificate and hung it in the bedroom - I can ALWAYS check to see when the anniversary is without being obvious. Our 3rd anniversary is coming up soon, and it feels like we just got married last month. 1 Quote

Count Sandor, SASS #74075 Posted 20 hours ago Posted 20 hours ago We waited until she graduated from college. Since Catholic weddings were only done on Saturdays, that much was a given. As a JUCO transfer, Sandy had two classes to finish during summer quarter before beginning her teaching career on August 27th, while I had one to finish - and a decent-paying State job in the AV Department - before I started my student teaching, also on the 27th. This left us with a choice of August 17, 1968, her birthday, allowing time for a short honeymoon, or August 24 and off to work in two days with no honeymoon. We agreed on the 17th, and after our 1st anniversary celebrated birthday/anniversary on alternate years - her idea, not mine. Count Quote
Blackwater 53393 Posted 16 hours ago Posted 16 hours ago It was a combination of the availability of the minister and the church, my new employer’s latitude in allowing me time off to travel, and the schedule of the Whitfield County, Georgia board of education’s schedule for opening day of classes.
