Here's a slight tweak with 40 categories: I also like the age groupings. I also don't see the need for Wrangler. I wouldn't want to see 8-9 year olds having to compete against teens... 12 has been the age minimum for Juniors since SASS was founded, and was cut off at 17. 18 year olds are considered adults, and can vote... have 'em compete with the adults. Here's my slight tweak with 52 categories: Since the upper age categories are usually the ones to get collapsed, require a minimum of 15 per category except the Youth & Jr. categories and might eliminate most of the "Elder" categories. Youth - 8-11 Junior - 12-17 Open - 18-whatever Open Senior - 61-74 Open Elder - 75+ Duelist - 18-whatever Senior Duelist - 61-74 Elder Duelist - 75+ Gunfighter - 18-whatever Senior Gunfighter - 61-74 Elder Gunfighter - 75+ Black Powder Open - 18-whatever Senior Black Powder - 61-74 Elder Black Powder Open - 75+ Black Powder Duelist - 18-whatever Black Powder Senior Duelist - 61-74 Black Powder Elder Duelist - 75+ Black Powder Gunfighter - 18-whatever Black Powder Senior Gunfighter - 61-74 Black Powder Elder Gunfighter - 75+ Classic Cowboy - 18-whatever Senior Classic Cowboy - 61-74 Elder Classic Cowboy 75+ Frontiersman - 18-whatever Senior Frontiersman - 61-74 Elder Frontiersman - 75+

But, where the thread started was only what was being honored at EOT, not the full number of possible categories. Which, theoretically, could exceed 100. categories.
Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933
There were 116 offered for EOT. This is a result of SASS's category matrix. That is nuts. 52 is still too many. The point of the thread is to reduce the number of categories to something that is reasonable.
Dogmeat Dad, SASS #48563L
I have posted this before, but I will add it here as well. If every possible category was held, there would be 19 Open Base Categories, 19 Female Base Categories, and 128 "Optional" categories, 64 Open and 64 Female for a total of 166 possible Categories. The "explosion" happened when age breaks were extended into what I call "Style Categories" like B-Western, Classic Cowboy, Duelist, Gunfighter, Frontier Cartridge, FC Duelist, FC Gunfighter, and Frontiersman. Adding the 8 possible age breaks to each of those is what created the 128 optional categories. I guess one could argue that there has never been a "Wrangler Frontier Cartridge Gunfighter" or a "49r Classic Cowboy" and that the age breaks don't apply until you hit the Senior age breaks, but that would only peel 16 possible categories out of the total and still leave 150 possible categories. It would be nice to get an official clarification on that so I could update the spreadsheet... Good our bad, it's where we are today. Most of those that will raise hell if their category is nixed are the older folks. The older folks make up the majority of the shooters attending matches. Hmmmmm...will they come if they are thrown into a category where they have to compete against the younger folks? When during the TG meeting at last years Land Run a certain shooter (that regularly posts here on the Wire), raised hell when it was made known that the category collapsing was done incorrectly. His category...might have been SS Duelist...maybe ES Duelist...should have been collapsed down into Senior rather then kept while having the Senior category collapsed into the Duelist category. "You're not going to get rid of MY category!!!"...said he...or...something like that. Phantom
Dogmeat Dad, SASS #48563L
Personally, I have never signed up for an age based category, and don't plan to. I figure I can get beat by anybody, no matter their age!

Jackalope
6 hours ago, Captain Bill Burt said: I like the age groupings. Age groupings are probably good. It seems reasonable that if there are divisions based on age, then the shooter should have to compete in whatever age division they happened to fit at the time. Griff
It's all good... until it's your ox that gets gored. Maddog McCoy SASS #5672
Just because you don't like our Fancy outfits you should not exclude the B-Western Shooters. I started in this shooting Modern - Just to be different I went out and bought a set of 5.5in 44spl Colt New Frontiers so I could say I shoot Colts. I went to B-Western from Modern so I could gunfighter with my New Frontiers, and every other style in SASS. I like shooting my Marlins against other Marlins (When when they work ) in B-Western. After 28 years of shooting, I finally get old enough to Senior, and you want to drop it. (well, it is my 30th year ending and I am 62, but thought I would throw that in there) The last match I attended, I shot senior for one of the few times since I got old enough, and I was the only one the category out of 40 shooters (local Match)( most were in the higher age brackets) Don't worry, you can beat this dead horse forever and still not make everybody happy.
