C45S (Cowboy Special) Reloading with Titegroup Question

So I'm putting together a load of .45 Cowboy Special rounds for my original Colt pistols.  I have 160 gr coated Bullets by Scarlett and a bottle of Titegroup.  I'm looking for recommendations for a mild load starting point that I can shoot duelist.  Thanks!

Simple.  Start with 4.0 Gr TightGroup and a firm Crimp.

4.2 gr TiteGroup is what I was using.

Since there is no load data for this round so I researched load data for the .44 Russian and the 45 Schofield with a 200 gr bullet. Titegroup has the 44 Russian at 3.5 starting and the Schofield at 4.5. I figured somewhere in the middle would work.

I shot nothing but black powder for about 20 years. The first time I ever loaded the C45S rounds were from Adirondack Jack, the originator of the round and they were loaded using black powder.  Just wanted a starting point for a smokeless recipe.

3.5 grains of Promo/red dot is what I use under a 160 gr bullet. Good starting point for Titegroup.

I've been shooting a C45S with 3.4 grains of Titegroup and a 160 PC bullet for about 10 years.  I feel 3.2 is too light, and 3.8 might be an upper limit.  There's a fairly noticeable difference between the 3.2 & 3.4.  I have some 4.0 Titegroup loaded by another shooter with 200 grain RFN, but they're pretty snappy for me.  With a 160 they might be okay, but I really like the soft recoil of the 3.4.

Looking at the case dimensions, I saw they are similar to .45ACP and I used the Min loads for a 200 gr LRNFPBB using Titegroup.

Works fine.

The Single Action Army design is designed for not much more than 14K psi.   .45 auto data runs mostly a lot hotter than that.   I keep C45 Spl loads to about 12K psi.  We don't need that much power anyway.  GJ

The C45S is almost identical to the 45 Autotrim in dimensions. The only real difference is that the 45 Autorim has a higher max pressure, so load accordingly.

I was charging 4.5 Gr Titegroup .45 ACP for a 200 gr LRN. (My SAAs are SASS NMV Rugers.)

Looking at the .45 Rim I see 4.3 Gr of Titegroup, so, I'll cut back .2 Grains and see how that works.

I realize I'm late to this party. I use 5gr of Titegroup for a 255gr RNFP with a crimp groove. I find the recoil mild in my Uberti 45 Colt. So for a 160gr bullet 3.4gr should work well as others have stated. I have also reloaded 200gr RNFP with crimp grooves at 4.4gr of powder.

 

Please post back and let me and others know how your special loads worked.

I just loaded some up with the Missouri Bullet's 185gr "Button" SWC with 3.8 gr of Titegroup. very mild recoil. Going to bump it up to 4.0 then 4.2 etc until I find the sweet spot. Have had that box of 500 for several years now and the C45S is a perfect use for them.

i appreciate this thread , am looking for a new load for my 455 webley mkV and im seeing these as a good starting place to look into that , also i have a friend that has my older mkIV boar war thats able to shoot the 45AR cases these will be useful for , thanks ,
