Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted November 1 Share Posted November 1 Some friends recently lost a little dog that had been with them for a dozen years or so. She was sick and horribly crippled and in pain, so they took that final step. They still have two others, but wanted anther like the one they lost. They finaly found one that seemed to fit their wants and needs. A few months old, pedigreed, all the shots and such. They showed me a picture and she is nearly as cute as my little dog. They started the procedure at a total cost of close to three grand. They have the money and the dog seemed perfect. The people who have the pup would have it delivered by a transporter of their choosing in Kansas. Comes the SCAM! They wanted to be paid in gift cards (alarm #1) and the transport company wanted the same thing, but would accept a cashier's check from American Express (who told my friends that they would NOT make out such a check.) (Alarm #2) made out to an individual, not a business. (Alarm #3. ) Neither would produce a mailing address except for a PO Box (alarm #4). When they were questioned they got somewhat nasty (Alarm #5) and my friends reported it to everyone they could think of: town and state governments, BBBs, Chambers of Commerce, TV, radio, newspapers, breeders' magazines and Kennel Clubs, etc. They started to get threatening messages from the criminals, so they reported it to USPS, the phone and computer companies, even the FBI , their email company and others, then they went online and bashed these scammers on social media...then they blocked all calls from the outfit. The end isn't here yet but probably will be one way of another. Hubby is a combat vet from 'Nam with 3 Purple Hearts and a peck of other medals, wife is a contract "end of life" nurse, and neither one is afraid of much of anything. As a team they are truly frightening, It takes a real AH to use a cute puppy to scam someone. Mossy Horn Gent Posted November 2 Share Posted November 2 Lots of puppy scams on Craig's list. Most want money up front. One scam is a listing in a specific town and the sellers do not reside there. Another is using the same picture in several ads. I remember a friend who saw his dog for sale (they stole the photo from facebook). You might not get a pedigree, but there are thousands of great pets who need homes. My "rescue" dog couldn't be a better member of the Taylor clan. She is a 12 year old mutt and I have invested, not counting food and normal care, less the $1,000.00 in her. That's less than $100.00 a year. She has some dental issues coming up that will cost a bunch, but she has earned the care she'll get. I've had a half dozen pedigreed dogs, (not counting the 60 something that we got when we were raising pedigreed beagles) from our bitches and some other people's pedigreed dogs), and maybe three times as many without any papers at all. I'm here to tell you that a pedigree isn't worth the paper it's written on when it comes to telling anyone what the dog has inside. They just give you bragging rights over something that doesn't really matter. Not any more than a human's "pedigree" can tell you what they are worth. Look at the people who have the influence in our nation and their "dynasties". Are they superior in any way to anyone else? Pedigree hasn't meant much, but breed characteristics do matter and are usually consistent - you know to an extent what to expect with the breed and get what you wanted most of the time. As to rescue, it would have to be a puppy - there are too many cases where bad folks have created crazy dogs and the adopter finds out the hard way. Pulp, SASS#28319 Posted November 2 Share Posted November 2 Agreed on the scammers. Wife has been wanting a new pup, we’ve run across at least three “breeders” that were highly suspicious. One put his pups on someone else’s Facebook page, others steal photos and place on their pages. I’ve seen the same pup on more than one website. All offer way low prices, and keep going lower if you back off. If you do a Google search for the breed you want, be highly suspicious of any websites with the words adorable or precious. Rip Snorter Posted November 2 Share Posted November 2 Last pup we bought, we went to the breeder (who we had gotten another dog from years back). She let the current litter of puppies out in a fenced grassy area. It was weeks too early for them to leave, but one in particular ran up to my wife and was playing with her. Second visit, 2 weeks on, same dog, same behavior. Needless to say, he was the one. Wonderful, smart and sweet natured - the only surprise is that he is enormous. Very top edge of breed standard.
