Quail

Forty Rod SASS 3935

Recommended Posts

I woke up this morning just past sun-up to my dog whining at the foot of the bed.  I got up to see what was going on and as soon as I had my britches on she headed for the back door.

I found her at the doggy door with most of her head out side, and she was wagging her butt off.  I opened the blinds and saw 13 top knots grazing around in the back yard.  I quietly unlocked and opened the door. and we went slowly and quietly out onto the deck.  The birds paid no attention, even after the dog slowly walked out onto the deck and looked down through the rail at them, not over 12-14 feet way.  She just stood there with her tail gently wagging as she watched the birds.

Finally they took off as a unit and only then did Trinket bark and run after them.  Within a second or two they were gone and she came in, got  a drink of water, and curled up up in her day bed.

She is the most gentle, friendly, loving dog I ever owned...unless she's going after feral cats.....and that bobcat encounter a few weeks ago.

Just an after thought: do quail migrate?  It's becoming winterish and they may have been headed to a warmer climate south of here.

An interesting question for sure. I was out last week on a work trip in Alabama that involved a day afield looking for some migrating quail and happened across numerous coveys. Beautiful southern fall day. I don’t know if it answers the question but these quail migrated directly to the dinner table!

As an aside, that’s a 1920 Parker Bros Trojan 16.
