Hardpan Curmudgeon SASS #8967 Posted October 24, 2024 Posted October 24, 2024 (edited) Back about ought six, when he was fourteen years old, Sassparilla Kid announced one day that he'd sure like to have a buscadero belt and holster rig like Rex O'Herlihan's in Rustler's Rhapsody. "Well, Kid, if you want such a thing, you're gonna have to make it yerself, 'cuz your old man surely ain't gonna buy it for ya!" He did. Didn't turn out half bad, and served him well for years. I came across the gunbelt a few days ago, and realized that it's due for some maintenance - fresh dye, and polishing, then got to thinking - would it be an improvement to add something to the expanse of leather above the holsters? Digging about in the leatherworking kit (I'm a leatherworking merit badge counselor), I came across a bunch of replica 1881 silver dollar conchos (the buckle holds an actual 1879 dollar). And had a thought - would they work, maybe? So... whaddaya think? Add one per side? Two? Or leave it alone? I just set 'em on the leather for the pictures.... PaleWolf Brunelle, #2495L Posted October 24, 2024 Posted October 24, 2024 (edited) Nice rig! IMO...I'd be a bit concerned about the possibility of scratching up the cyilnder when drawing/reholstering. Edited October 24, 2024 by PaleWolf Brunelle, #2495L 9 Quote
Rip Snorter Posted October 24, 2024 Posted October 24, 2024 I wouldn't put them there, but they are softer than steel, or finish. I have put them on a good few belts I have made, but not directly over the holster. Probably a matter of taste, since SASS guns get a bit of a beating however you manage them. Quote

Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770 Posted October 24, 2024 Posted October 24, 2024 Oh heck, go all the way. I've got conchos on my gun belts. They add some character to a plain black belt. 3 Quote
Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted October 24, 2024 Posted October 24, 2024 I'm a concho-aholic, (and some stud and buttons, too) but I learned to be careful while wearing them. My wife nearly skinned me when I scratched up a couple of brand new solid oak dining room chairs, and later when one of them tore the cover on a sofa. I started taking them off when I got into the car or truck, went in the house, etc. I finally stopped wearing them a few years back when my tuck and duffle weighed as much as I did and my back and legs decided they didn't like me any more. I still like the look, though....that and big nice buckles like Will Ghormley's creations and a few others. Not the flashy overwhelming ones, though. 2 Quote

I’d pull the two directly over the holsters and move the circled ones inward to directly above the outside edges of the holsters. Then you could place a couple more, evenly spaced to the area between the holsters. Ya’ might put one on each of the holsters too! Edited October 24, 2024 by Blackwater 53393 2 Quote
Alpo Posted October 24, 2024 Posted October 24, 2024 I don't like 'em. I've seen many holsters listed for sale, and the holster look like a decent design, except it's been trashed out by conchos here and there and all over. 3 Quote

Cactus Jack Calder Posted October 27, 2024 Posted October 27, 2024 6-7 years ago I bought a rig that was shown with Heart conchos on the holsters. They had been the Pards wife’s rig. I told him if he wished to keep the Hearts for any reason he was welcome, I’d take the rig plain. He agreed and to my surprise he replaced the Hearts with Mexican Paso conchos. They looked good to me so I’ve kept them on the rig. One on each holster is enough. CJ 2 Quote
Hardpan Curmudgeon SASS #8967 Posted October 28, 2024 Author Posted October 28, 2024 (edited) "Trashed out" seems kinda harsh. That said, the Kid has plenty of other holsters that are either tooled or otherwise "unadorned." But his intent with these was specifically for "B Western:" B-Western/Lady B-Western Category B-Western shooting category carries rules and guidelines for both costuming/leather and firearm usage.... Leather Rules: - Buscadero holster rigs or drop holster rigs are required. All revolvers must be carried below the top of the gun belt. - All belt and holster rigs must be embellished (fancy stitching, Conchos, spots, or tooling). Gateway Kid SASS# 70038 Life Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 While I am not a huge fan of conchos, I know several who are. A few done tastefully on a belt add to the overall flavor of the rig and if the owner is happy that is all that matters. I sometimes compare them to the chrome on a nice classic car versus the blackout look on more modern vehicles, if that is what you like more power to you. (I like chrome bumpers, wheels, exhaust tips and stuff). Regards Gateway Kid 1 Quote
bgavin Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 Bling is not for me, but I don't do B-Western either. For me, the formula is (Function > Form). My thoughts were about the location of those conchos interfering with the revolver. For my bride.. different story. I tried hard to get her some nice sterling silver conchos for her rig, only to find out the silver smith went out of business, or only sells CCS now. Quote
