The truck is cool, but do they actually have it?

I remember them. One even made it into the movies.

Major League. Willie Mays Hayes.

You know what's weird? As many friends of mine when I was younger owned VW Bugs, I have never been in one. I mean crud they were EVERYWHERE!

Yet now, they're expensive as all get out. They're like Jeep CJs: Either a "project", busted to heck, missing parts, or a pile of rust, OR "restored" and worth a LOT of Money.

You got me thinking. When I was in the fourth grade my father's brother brought his family for a visit. They had a beetle. And I remember being in the backseat. I don't remember whether we went anywhere or whether I just got in it to see what it was like because I'd never seen anything like that car before.

And that's the only time I remember ever being inside of Volkswagen. Any kind of Volkswagen.

I still miss my 69 Karman Ghia convertible! With 8 inch almost bald rear tires, that thing was a tractor in the snow. Ya had to love how the windshield frosted on the inside instead of outside. Still remember my little red Firestone scraper on the visor!! Generally got about 4 inches defrosted by the end of a 45 minute ride to work! But it always made it compared to the average car with nice snow tires!! Back then it cost about $3 to fill the tank and drive all week plus! My first ride in a big was a 50s vintage beetle around 1970 with it's high performance 36 HP motor!

Can still hear that crazy whistle the exhaust made!!

I learned to drive in a 1955 VW Beetle.  It may be the best car I ever drove in the snow.  We used to take trips out to the country with six of us.  Mom, Dad, Grandma and three kids.  One of us kids would climb in behind the back seat for the ride.  Good thing we were small.

VW Beetles had some of the best Commercials on TV at the time.

My dad got rid of it when his mechanic told him to stop bringing it back because he couldn't find parts for it anymore.  It was one of only two cars my dad ever bought new.

Our high school government teacher's neighbor bought one.

The poor fellow made the mistake of expressing his delight and anticipation at getting phenomenally good gas mileage.

Our high school government teacher was still eighteen years old inside, apparently, because he'd slip over and siphon a half gallon from the gas tank every night.

He described how the poor fellow -- who meticulously measured his gas mileage -- spoke with a long and doleful face how his prized Beetle Bug was getting worse mileage than his Detroit sedan.

His buddy the schoolteacher suggested that maybe a Porsche engine takes some breaking-in -- "It is European, after all," he said.  "Give it a week and see if it improves."

At the end of a week, he began adding the purloined fuel to the man's gas tank, and suddenly sorrowful statements of substandard mileage became glowing reports of phenomenally good mileage.

Our high school government teacher then suggested that he'd heard of this happening, and the engine will very likely settle down to the expected mileage once break-in was complete.

It took him a few days to add the rest of the stolen petrol to the poor unsuspecting neighbor's gas tank.

Our high school government teacher waited a few years before telling anyone about what he'd done.

Gotta ask:  Where'd they put the motor?

Maybe left it in the shop?  The Photo shop?

They could put the motor in the trunk. But what I'd like to know is where does the water go? Either from the sink or the toilet?

Two that come to mind are the one showing the guy who drives the snow plow driving through the new fallen snow to get TO the plow,

And the one where they drive one into the water to show that they float.

I remember both of those. But this one has stuck with me for a long time.

My Ghia floated! ( Don't ask) But the water was pretty damn high on on the door, almost to the window! Wicked steam out of the defroster:P
