Useless fun fact-ish type stuff

Now I am going to have to watch that series again. I will probably do that when winter comes about.

On another sci-fi series note: equipment labels on the series “The Expanse” (Amazon Prime series) appear amazingly detailed and look “technical” in nature. They even have fictitious company logos on them.
Perhaps the film, set and computer graphics crews learned from Star Trek - The Next Generation videos that some people actually do pay attention to those little things like signage.

I was watching some show from the 70’s a few months back and I could see the mesh and glue of the fake mustache on one guy. It was poorly done, but on an old tv I’ll bet you couldn’t tell.

I will have to try and remember what show that was so I can get a photo.

Holstein leather is preferred for baseballs. One cowhide can make around 100 baseballs. MLB baseballs are made in Costa Rica, minor league baseballs are made in China.

Japanese baseballs are made of leather from younger animals and is thought to be superior.

I don't know about washing your eyes with soap, although I would not want to.

But late in life my grandmother got some kind of eye infection, and my mother washed her eyes every night. With Johnson's baby shampoo. I guess they're right when they say it don't sting.

Horses don't have a gallbladder.

Rats and horses can't vomit (at least it is so rare that that for all practical purposes one can make that statement.)

You're confusing a historical reenactment with imaginary playtime.

What part of cowboy action shooting is a historical reenactment?

Or are you referring to Star Trek as a historical reenactment, because we all know cowboy action shooting is an imaginary play time.

I see it as a celebration of Cowboy/western movies as presented by Hollywood, so historical accuracy is allowed but not required.

The original text is no longer on the SASS site, but this bit (with the original link, my bold) is on several club sites:

https://tiogasportsmen.com/cowboy-action

"

One of the unique aspects of SASS approved Cowboy Action Shooting™ is the requirement placed on costuming. Each participant is required to adopt a shooting alias appropriate to a character or profession of the late 19th century, a Hollywood western star, or an appropriate character from fiction. Their costume is then developed accordingly. More comprehensive information is available at http://www.sassnet.com/About-What-is-SASS-001A.php.

"

This was a key driver of me choosing John Kloehr. Hollywood could certainly have made him a character in a movie, a Kansas City newspaper article credited him with taking out the entire Dalton Gang single-handedly. He himself afterwards wrote that the newspaper article was fiction, did not relay what he actually did do (he took out one member, may have injured another). The article as published was a shock to him as he did not relay the content in his interview. In my research, I have found the rifle in the Kansas City newspaper article is not the rifle he used in the actual shooting (article says it was that rifle).

But Hollywood could have gone with the newspaper article! And cast any actor, and costumed any desired way without regard to how the actual John Kloehr dressed or the true historical facts.

So I feel I am within what is a character from the late 19th century and a character from fiction as Hollywood could have portrayed him with an actor (me, since I am doing the casting).

What I am not is some cosplay participant. That is a completely different topic.

The biggest problem I have faced with my alias is folks saying "Hey, John, you seem to like shooting these guns, you should pick an alias."

Exactly. Reel West, not Real West.

Technically, Cowboy Action can be a form of cosplay.  Merriam-Webster defines cosplay as "the activity or practice of dressing up as a character from a work of fiction". So any of us dressing as a fictional character, and I'm including those of us that made up a character, my own Sgt. C.J. Sabre being such, are cosplaying.

Most anybody dressing for a Renaissance Festival is cosplaying. Kids in costume on Halloween are cosplaying.

When you were a little kid sitting in front of the TV shooting your cap gun with Gene, Hoppy, or Roy, you were cosplaying. I was too.

Is it different that other forms? Maybe. But by definition, we are cosplaying. I'm good with that.
