We Voted Today

Recommended Posts

The polling place was packed with a long line. Still, there were lots of volunteers checking ID and registration and lots of voting machines. We were in and out in 15 minutes. We’re blessed our state and county make it so easy.

I hope our nation knows the results the following day like the old days, before computers got involved.

I am not a trained poll worker and every state has variations. From a general sense, I understand:

They used to start counting when the polls opened, no longer the case. Ballots are not processed until polls close.

First restriction was to not announce early results as folks stayed home rather than go out and vote. This was due to the big races being settled, so folks were not going to vote for smaller races like state, county, or city races.

Now, the results from in-person polling from "the day of" are counted first. Since computerized in most places, this takes minutes. If the results are not conclusive, then absentee (early voting) ballots are counted next, this takes longer. If still not conclusive, then provisional (new registrations, folks who moved, etc.) ballots are counted, check back in the morning for results. Ballots from troops are somewhere in the after-counting. If all races are settled "for sure" compared to all outstanding uncounted votes, outstanding are not always counted (tallied).

Once all races are settled, then results are released. So the closest races are released last even if partial results are published. The networks do call races based on partial results. I predict 7 states will be released last.

Also understand when a race is not "for sure," the ballots are counted for that race but not all votes on that ballot; only the undecided race.

These processes are supposed to stop big oopses like:

The tiny unincorporated town we live near, requires and records voter ID though we all know each other.  What is so difficult?  Everyone needs ID to function in society.  No one has yet showed up to collect the bounty for presenting a person with no Govt. ID.  I think it is ten grand.

I have lost all faith in our government.

Legal bribes (PAC money) and insider trading has made it a millionaires club on a 175k a year salary.

It will never stop being corrupt until term limits and elimination of lobbyist. The temptation is too strong for the vast majority of people.

My lady and I voted today at a local church. Not sure what the weather will be on election day and our choices were made some time ago.

Back in 2020, Biden called for early voting and Trump called for showing up on election day. The result was in-person votes swung one way and absentee ballots flipped the count.

This time, Harris and Trump are both calling for everyone to vote early.

Fine, maybe Otto gets a pass as "o" is right next to "i"

In our little Vermont town, we ask your name and check it against the voter list. Our elections are by "Australian Ballot". When the the polls close, volunteers like myself open the box and 2 of work as teams to count the votes. The mailed in ballots are put in the box first thing as the polls open. All numbers are triple checked and then sent to the State.

I'll give you a dollar three eighty if you'll deliver it.

I have a beautiful ocean view spot for it right here in Central Arizona right across he road from the Eiffel Tower, and there's a nice restaurant (called The Flying Dutchman) run by Amelia Earhart greeting folks and Judge Crater running the waiters and waitresses.  Jimmy Hoffa will be tending bar and and Elvis is singing.  We have some some other well known folks cooking, waiting tables and parking cars.

Join us.  We'll have a good old time.  :D

I'm not sure I believe you, maybe depends on your definition of a "nice" restaurant. Or is "in Arizona" a qualifier? Not disputing anything else, Amelia is known to be very nice and Elvis certainly has been spotted a few times over the years..

Me ‘n’ Schoolmarm will go to vote tomorrow.  They always require photo ID and check that against the registration list. We registered here in the county forty-four years ago and have never missed voting in any election!

Back then, you had to furnish a birth certificate to prove you were born in the US or naturalization documents.

I don’t know if they still do that here anymore or not. I sincerely hope that they do!

We “exercised the franchise” this morning!

I often split my ticket to get the best candidates elected.  Today, if there’d been a “party lever” I’d have just pulled it!!

What was offered wasn’t anything like the best of choices! There were several choices of bad or worse!!  There were a few good options in a very few cases.

If I were to put it into a cliche, it would be, “the cream of the crop was a bit curdled”!!
