Texas Lizard Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 Heinz dill pickles were my choice for hamburgers and other things....Now, they no longer make them....What I have found so far...Are bad, real bad tasting...Is there anything with good taste left???? Texas Lizard
Subdeacon Joe Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 I'm partial to Also if you don't want to slice them yourself. ADDED: I grew up eating Del Monte, don't care for them now. Valasic aren't bad, used to be my go to brand. Can't stand Clausen.
Blackwater 53393 Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 I prefer Clausen kosher dills and the spicy ones when I can find ‘em. They’re much crisper and they hold up better on barbecue and burgers. I buy the biggest jar of the sandwich slices and add crushed red pepper, hot red onion, and some Tapatio to the brine. Then I let ‘em marinate in that for a week or two until I’m ready for a sandwich! My mom used to can some pretty good hot kosher dills, but she doesn’t do it anymore and I’ve run out of them. The Clausen dill chips aren’t bad either, but I like the slices and spears the best.
J-BAR #18287 Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 Vlasic pickles https://www.vlasic.com/ At WalMart or on Amazon. Or Tony Packo's: https://www.tonypacko.com/pickles-peppers-and-sauces.php
Abilene Slim SASS 81783 Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 “Dill Pickles” could be a great SASS alias. 😁
Buckshot Bear Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 Do you have a saying in the U.S like we do down here "Jeez your a dill" meaning your a 'bloody idiot' ?
Gracos Kid Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 And for some reason drinking the Dill pickle juice will quickly help leg cramps to go away......I save the juice just for that purpose.....You can actually buy pickle juice shots at Walmart but they are $1.50 for just one gulp.......Cheaper to save the juice from the jars.....
TN Mongo, SASS #61450 Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 +1 for the Mt. Olive Kosher dills. I like Claussen and Vlasic pickles, but they have gotten too expensive. I can afford them, it just bugs me to pay that much more.

Rode the Shawnee with himin eighteen and sixty-seven, he managed to turn the herd an' stop the stampeed almost afore it started. And again in eighteen and seventy-four, this time on the Goodnight-Loving. Rode half of it with a broke arm after his horse threw him shying from a snake. Yeah, Ol' Gurr Kin. Helluva man.
Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 Save the dill pickle juice to make dill pickle chip dip. Can't buy it since 1998 or so, so I make my own. Just add one pureed pickle slice and juice to your taste to sour cream and let it sit for a day or two, then dive on in.

Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 My local grocery has one variety of Vlassic, many of a store brand and many more of Mt. Olive.

Bet it would be a good spread in a roast beef sandwich. Maybe with a touch of horseradish added in.
Rye Miles #13621 Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 Never had a taste for pickles of any kind, in fact I hate em!🙄

Yul Lose Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 I like Nathans but they’re getting harder to find locally.

J.D. Daily Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 The last time I was in Reno I stopped a COSTCO and along with the Grillos spears they typically have they had Mt. Olive that Subdeacon Joe had recommended on a previous dill pickle thread. So I purchased a jar as well a Grilos spears. I have to admit I am a Mt. olive man after a taste test. The misses agrees the Mt. Olive are great.
Blackwater 53393 Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 I just don’t like the texture of Mt. Olive pickles. They lack that snap that I get from Clausen and some homemade kosher dills and they’re more salty to my taste. I bought some Whickes brand hot pickles. They were crisp and had the heat I wanted, but I wouldn’t want them all the time. Vlassics are a little less limp than Mt. Olive, but STILL don’t have the texture I want in a pickle. Haven’t seen any Nathan’s in a long time. Glad there’s a selection!! Variety let’s folks get what they want!!
Yul Lose Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 Costco used to carry Carnegie Deli pickles, probably the best pickles ever but they haven’t carried them for 5 years or so, I guess. Nathan’s were very similar but the only market that carried them out here changed hands and the new owners quit stocking them.

I'll occasionally get a jar of Mt. Olive that don't have a snap to them, but most are pretty crisp. They seem to have stopped making the Zesty Kosher Dills that were my favorite. Really good sliced lenghtwise on a mandolin for putting on sandwiches.
Pat Riot Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 Clausen’s only for me. Now I don’t even eat those. Athsma! It sucks!

Damn, I hate Fry's / Kroger's...and they just bought the only other grocery (Safeway) in our town. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and go to Wally World (and I hate them almost as much as I hate Kroger's.
T.K. Posted October 25, 2024 Posted October 25, 2024 So far, I found these were the best tasting DILLS! (To be fair, I have not tried the Nathans) But I do love the Mount Olive "SWEET HEAT" bread and butter pickles!!!!!
MizPete Posted October 25, 2024 Posted October 25, 2024 I don't have many brand loyalties but Mt Olive is one of them.
Buck Garrett Posted October 26, 2024 Posted October 26, 2024 I hope my Pard Wild Bill Pickle read this thread.

Subdeacon Joe Posted October 26, 2024 Posted October 26, 2024 I guess I'm going to have to give Clausen another try. Been about 20 years.
Okie Sawbones, SASS #77381 Posted October 26, 2024 Posted October 26, 2024 Claussen, followed by Boar's Head. Mt. Olive for inexpensive minded. We make our own, which IMO is better than those above, because I can control the crunch, and I like a lot of garlic.

I'd forgotten and want to thank you for the reminder. I sure miss her and things like this help.
Subdeacon Joe Posted November 6, 2024 Posted November 6, 2024 I was in the store and saw Clausen Kosher Dill Miniatures. Bought a small jar. Sort of crisp. But LORD are they salty! Almost no other flavor. Pretty much what I remember of them. Not worth the premium price.
