WIFI network name

Recommended Posts

We visited our granddaughter and her husband yesterday.  He is a computer whiz, working from home.  I asked him for his wifi network name and password.  His network name:  "router, I hardly know her"

 I think she chose well!

I like "FBI Van #4." Never did that, but have seen it a few times.

My current router is the default provided by the ISP (several very similar nearby), my previous was "A Cabin." Which was fine on a mountain full of cabins.

Main thing is to not have it link directly to you by name or address, traffic and use can be sensed without direct access which can show you might not be home. That is actually fine for a break-in unless you come home during it.

Mine is simply "mywifi". If I ever have to change it, it will be something like "BorderPatrolVan3". (Tucson, you know).

Until about a year ago (had to replace the router) mine was "ICE Survellience"

(Our local demographics are MUCH more slanted than Tucson ~ 77% vs 42%....)

Mine is so creative. It’s “Tom’s WiFi”.;)

My son-in-law would have a bird about having anything that would correlate the network and owner.  Now if your name were Bill, it would be a clever deception.  ))))

I might add that my s-i-l is IMO a worry wort  but he means well.

he is a problem solver for a network company.

mine is Missioncontrol.

“Mission Control” looks appropriate.

I will be getting a new WiFi service soon, I’m sure. My current service charges far too much now.

I considered a play on police or law enforcement, but reconsidered.

Here are some name ideas I was tossing around:

- Joe Mama’s

- K9 Attack Detail

- Nacho WiFi

- Sam & Ella’s

My first knowledge of WiFi and the need for passwords occurred when I would notice this guy sitting across from my LAPD neighbor’s house at the same time everyday. I knew my neighbor was at work but his wife was at home. I figured he was stalking her because, quite honestly, she was a very attractive woman.

I called my city’s police department about the “stalker” and a patrol car literally arrived a minute later.
Turns out the guy was taking advantage of the LAPD officer’s open WiFi and he was on his lunch break watching porn.

The porn guy never returned, as far as I know.

Today’s new hobo seeks out unprotected WiFi and marks the area so other “enlightened free spirits” (filthy hippie types) know about it and camp / hang out in the area to use it.
If you see “WiFi” painted on a curb, tree, post or any surface outside a business or home it’s like a douchebag beacon.

Put the laptop on the car seat and drive down residential neighborhoods.
Look for the first unsecured network.
If multiples are found, select the one with the most bars.

Way back in another place and time, a neighbor had open WiFi. I was sorely tempted to send things to his shared printer...

Buy your own modem & router.

Unless of course the ISP doesn't allow it.  But I think the days of ISPs mandating you use their gear are done.

On another note:  On a recent call to our ISP the agent was adamant there was "no way" we could have "Wi-Fi" because we weren't leasing equipment from them.

NULL

And be careful actually connecting and using open wifi these days.  A number of those actually are there on purpose to capture your stuff. (Not so much your browsing, which if you're smart you're always using a https page but depending on how you're viewing your email that's unencrypted.

I'm an Xfinity/Comcast customer.
Normally, I subscribe to "own your own router", but not in this instance.
Router recalls and replacements are a regular thing with this company.

Also, they maintain such tight control over it, that it is not practical to own your own hardware anymore.
You can no longer access the router from its internal gateway address on your network.
You are forced to install and use their damn mobile phone app instead.

For those who port forward, this becomes a never ending battle.
I do remote support for my clients by port forwarding in the router to their various servers.
The Comcast nanny is constantly turning this off, which requires my computer illiterate clients to get on their phones and attempt to get it enabled again.

One of the things I was [suing for with xfinity was 2 gb service . Then I added fidium fiber’s 2gb service.  Ooooh fast.

when I cancelled xfin I mentioned this. The rep said we can do that. I said you should have done it last year.

two months later I cancelled tv service.

I'm confused.  Everything in that post after the sentence in bold contradicts it.
