Tall John Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 Sold: is a “like new” “JM” stamped MARLIN 1894CB357 Cowboy Limited lever action rifle -357 Mag / 38special. -20” octagonal bbl. -10 shot tubular magazine -s/n 9101xxxxx mfg in 2009 -original box, owners manual and lever safety lock is included. This rifle was tuned or “slicked up” by Gordon Leavitt Single Action, one of the original Cowboy Gunsmiths in New England. (See video with sound on) I’ve put about 50 rounds through it and added a slip on brass front sight. The forend has one tiny dent but it looks original as it is under the original finish. (See picture) One just like this just sold for $1,683 on gunbroker.com but didn’t include the original box or tuning work. (See picture) Price: $1300.00. Sam Sackett Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think Remington bought Marlin in 2009. There were some JM barrels that went with the purchase along with other parts/pieces. Remington used these barrels when they first started building guns in their factory. This makes 2009 a bit cloudy as to who actually built the guns. But, if my memory is correct, Remington added a couple of letters ahead of the serial number, so this particular rifle should be a true Marlin. Sam Sackett

Doug E Turtle Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 The proof mark is based on who owned the company at the time the barrel was proof-tested. When Marlin was sold to Remington in December of 2007, Marlin had a number of JM proofed barrels in inventory and Remington continued to build rifles with those barrels. Leverguns with a JM proof and serial # prefix of 91 or 92 would still have been built in the old Marlin plant in North Haven by existing Marlin employees using the existing machinery, though under Remington ownership. It wasn't until 2010 that Remington closed North Haven and moved production to their Ilion NY plant, but few of the old Marlin employees and little of the old machinery made the transition successfully. There may have been some JM proofed barrels with REM serial numbers from the Ilion factory, but very few. They were supposedly all .38 Spl only, but several have surfaced with .357 chambers, but stamped .38 Spl only. I currently have one and sold another. Still great guns!!

Tall John Posted October 16, 2024 Author Posted October 16, 2024 Guys, I just posted an update with pictures; you are correct that this is a “COWBOY LIMITED” rather than a “Cowboy Special”. Thanks for asking the questions and posting the relevant history surrounding the mfg date of this rifle. I originally planned to use this rifle for SASS, but then was able to buy a fully slicked up and short stroked Mirakou 1873 from a World Champion and got real comfortable with the 1873 action and fit. Then I had to have a Taylor 1873 Comanchero and I don’t need three 38/357’s so I’m making this rifle available.
