Linn Keller, SASS 27332, BOLD 103 Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 Saw on one of those reality TV cop shows the wife likes so well, a Honda computer glitched, firewalled the throttle and held it there, much to the distress of the pleading-for-help eighteen-year-old behind the wheel! Something similar happened to certain of the Secret Service vehicles, one of which went fugazi on White House property and blasted full throttle into a tree, much to the distress of the brake-pedal-standing agent death-gripping the wheel! I am more and more inclined to raid however many junkyards are necessary to resurrect a '67 half ton Dodge with a slant six engine. I used to have one. Body pretty much rotted off but the running gears were sound -- no electronics, not even a radio. 4 Quote
Abilene Slim SASS 81783 Posted October 12, 2024 Posted October 12, 2024 (edited) These tales of standing on the brake pedal as the car accelerates through the wall/tree/garage door/down the mountain grade are total BS. After extensive investigation all of these claims were proved false. Don’t get me wrong, the drivers will swear to their graves that’s what happened and I won’t accuse them of lying. But under panic, actual reactions and memories don’t match up. “I didn’t pull the trigger. The gun just went off”, right? The problem is the driver is surprised by a malfunction and unknowingly applies the wrong solution. What the a NHSTA is trying to address is eliminating surprises. Back in the 80’s it was Audis. More recently, it was Toyotas. Not one of the incidents was verifiable or duplicated under intense investigation, even by NASA. Here’s the caveat - if the brake system is fully functional, the accelerator cannot override the brakes. It’s been shown repeatedly that drivers claiming otherwise in fact had their foot on the gas or otherwise off the brakes. Makes great television though. If you don’t believe that, check it out yourself. Go to a place with lots of room, stomp the brake pedal to the floor with your left foot, then floor the accelerator with your right. If the brakes are working, nobody is going anywhere. Sorry for the rant. I despise the media and its sensational myths. Edited October 12, 2024 by Abilene Slim SASS 81783 1 Quote
