They imploded the Tropicana hotel to make way for the new baseball stadium.

Just a few years back I saw Rich Little perform there. Great show. Neat casino, but had out lived it's days.

It was built in the ‘50’s, one of the oldest hotels in Vegas.

I remember when the big name stand-up comics would announce their upcoming engagements at The Tropicana on The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson.

We went to most all the SASS conventions in Vegas. Getting to where there aren't many of those old timers left. Broke my heart when they imploded Riviera. Stardust is gone. I'm sure there's more that don't come to mind.

JHC :(

Yeah - I was woke up this morning to the sound of rumbling explosions as the Tropicana fell (I had forgot it was happening this very early morning).

The casino business is not sentimental - it uses a facility until it can no longer contribute and then moves on to the next.

The Tropicana, Stardust, Frontier, Desert Inn, Landmark, Hacienda, Sands, Dunes all outlived their useful life.

And the ones that don't get imploded; get remodeled, rebranded and re invented many times over their existence.

While it can be sad to lose that history; it is also exciting to see the growth that is required to "keep up with the Jones".

While others cities have stagnated and diminished; Las Vegas has added professional sports from Nascar, F1, NHL, NFL, WNBA and UFC (soon Baseball and NBA) added amazing athletic and entertainment venues such as Allegiant Stadium, T Mobile arena and The Sphere.

Added wonderous destinations like Fontainebleau and Resorts World - rebranded destinations like Horseshoe and Hard Rock.

I have some nostaglia for the past - but it is far outstripped by excitement for the future.

Time marches on. Can't really disagree with your assessment but I'm a nostalgic guy. My wife and I made our first trip when we were dating close to 30 years ago, and went every year for 12-15 years after. IIRC on our first trip NYNY was under construction, we stayed at Fitzgerald's down town. People carried a bucket of coins around to play the slots. The good old days! I always loved the SASS conventions, had many a great time for some years.

But times change. I went to the last SASS convention by my self and pretty much wish I hadn't. I was ready to come home after the first day. The Riv was a shadow of its old self and was demolished shortly after. Most of our beloved places were either gone or as you say rebranded, renamed, etc etc, essentially gone. One of my favorite things used to be driving up and down the strip enjoying the lights. At the last traffic got so bad and a stoplight every 100 yards that last eternally, new stuff built up to the sidewalk made it look like Manhattan and you couldn't see much anyway ruined that. As much as we once loved the place, I have no desire to ever return.

Vegas is one of those places you either like or don't. I have no trouble understanding why people like it, but I've only stayed there once, at a small covention at Caesar's Palace 21 years ago. Everything was good but the city in general put me off. Haven't been back.

Reno I lked better  and went there three times over the years, mostly in connection with skiing.

I was there once. My cousin was playing drums in a band at the Maxim Hotel. Good band , great food. My cousin lived in Vegas so I stayed with him. Fun town to visit, did some slot machines and that was it.
