Aircraft Carriers, 1936

"Aircraft carriers of the United States Navy passing under the incomplete Golden Gate Bridge on November 12, 1936 along with their escorts. From the front of the photo to the back, we have USS Lexington (CV-2), USS Ranger (CV-4), and USS Saratoga (CV-3) as the lead ship of the formation.

At the time, this was the entirety of the United State's carrier power. USS Langley (CV-1) had entered drydock the previous month for conversion into a seaplane tender. Meanwhile, the first of the Yorktown class would not be commissioned until almost a year later (Yorktown (CV-5) in September of 1937)"

Is that Alcatraz Island at the top of the photo?

It is.  And to the viewers right of the line is one of the ferry boats that connected San Francisco and Sausalito.

Added:

Make that two.   The smaller one may have been for Mare Island.

Dad served aboard Ranger... several years later, and in the Atlantic.  :)

Is it true that they turned "USCG base -Treasure Island" into a homeless camp area?

https://www.ktvu.com/news/new-housing-on-treasure-island-for-formerly-homeless-veterans

SAN FRANCISCO - Treasure Island had a ribbon cutting Thursday for the first new building that offers over one hundred units of affordable housing to previously homeless veterans.

The Maceo May Apartments is named after one of the earliest local advocates of homeless veterans, who died in 2014, but whose legend lives on with healthy housing for homeless veterans.

https://catholiccharitiessf.org/treasure-island-supportive-housing/

Catholic Charities Treasure Island Supportive Housing promotes self-sufficiency and independence of formerly homeless families. Clients are supported through an array of services designed to help families achieve residential, economic, and personal stability. Permanent, subsidized supportive housing is provided to formerly homeless and low-income families where the head of household may have one or more special needs, including mental health challenges, disabling HIV/AIDS, or a history of substance abuse.

In addition, Treasure Island Supportive Housing collaborates with other organizations to provide community activities for children and families.

From Wikipedia:

In 1996, Treasure Island and the Presidio of San Francisco Army Post were decommissioned and opened to public control, under stipulations. Treasure Island is now part of District 6 of the City and County of San Francisco, though it is still owned by the Navy. In 1993, the naval station was selected for closure, and Navy operations ended there in 1997. Some of the property was transferred to the Federal Highway Administration, the Labor Department and the U.S. Coast Guard, and the rest is open for development.

So it's not like the base was closed in order to make it a homeless camp.   Looks like it's not a camp at all.

That's good to hear it is being used for veterans housing... The spin the media made it sound more like it was opened for general population.

I'll support it 100% for veterans, including first responders.

Illegal aliens, third and fourth generation welfare families, and other dregs of "humanity" should be taken further out to sea and told to turn south  and walk back.

If anyone wants to pick them up and save them, they should take a trip south with them and not be allowed back either.

It seems to be a bit of both.  But NOT the sprawling, squalid tent camps that are all too common in California these days.

Yeah, Big Corporate Press loves to stir the pot and fan the flames of hate.
