It happens, including in the military.  There is only so much money available and deferring maintenance is often used to save money or allocate money to where it is needed more.  Sooner or later it catches up and you end up with needed equipment out of service.

That article is purely designed to get people emotionally involved and is very poorly worded (no surprise).

 

As a matter of fact, when I searched for "what is a truck in fire department" that published article definition is one of the first to come up.

 

They could have talked to some people in the FD to get a better description and actually capture what the real problem is: they can't reach the upper floors of taller buildings.  Then again, not knowing that area, they may not NEED to reach over one or two stories.  If that's the case, actually publishing the facts wouldn't cause the fear mongering they are potentially looking for.

 

A "TRUCK" as designated in fire departments is a designed to carry turn-table mounted ladders of various lengths.

 

Various departments will call these apparatus trucks, ladders, aerials, etc.

 

I seem to remember that "trucks" had shorter ladders (ours was ~40 ft) and "ladders" had longer ladders.  Then there are the various "aerial" devices.  I don't remember the specifics from almost 30 years ago.

Either the cities FD budget is inadequate or they can't fill truck mechanic positions.  Their union contracts probably don't allow contracting out for HD vehicle maintenance.

Liberals run Chicago.  They proudly declare that they are liberals and that they are “left wing”.  These are indisputable facts!

 

These people proudly declare that they’re in favor of defunding law enforcement and other public services!  They have failed to set aside monies to fund repair and maintenance on these vehicles and haven’t provided replacements!!

 

SO! Either by design or by ineptitude these self proclaimed liberals are IN FACT responsible for this situation!!

In the summer of 1978, the town of Dolton, which is in Cook County, decided they needed a new garage building but no one would cough up the money. Mysteriously, there was a fire, destroying the structure which also contained roughly 1/4 snow fighting equipment, also a mystery, it was the oldest stuff. Come January 1979 Chicago and Cook County get hit with one of the largest blizzards in history, before all the equipment had been replaced. Normally they would have had even that blizzard handled within a couple of days, but it took them nearly a week to get it handled.

Unless someone has DIRECT access to the ACTUAL records, there are NO other FACTUAL reasons.  Reacting to an article intended to light you up without any factual information is a fools errand.  You can believe what you want.  However, spreading garbage is of no service to anyone.

Our city paid a hefty price in dollars and inconvenience when maintenance and repairs of existing assets and infrastructure was put off in "Budget Restraints"

We saved money in the repair and maintenance budget all right, but MAN you should have seen the Capital Cost increases over the next few years.

Many, many times more than what was "saved".

Chief did you ever run across a "tele-Squirt" or a Bronto Sky-Lift in your career?

Can't say I have.  

 

All of my experience was around ships, aircraft and low level structures.  We never had a need for anything over the 40' Truck.

 

Bronto makes some true beasts.
