Well, there are more modern days on the beach!

Here is BIG RED, Stephen L. with Jacquin Garary III (The original "PACO" of HERBIE Goes Bananas fame" driving on the track and a day at the beach.

Yep.  And they transferred a lot of the energy of a crash to the driver.  They kept building them stronger and stronger until someone came up with the idea that maybe they should design them to crumple so the hardware absorbes that energy rather than transferring it to the software behind the wheel.

did everyone have a VW bug back then ? one of my best high school friends had a 63 in those middle  60s , a neighbor had a 60s carman gia in the early 60s , - glorified bug , but thats all i knew of till i met my wifes grandmother in 1991 - she had a black 68 she was still driving at 93 ,
