2-0 now

If the Yankees have one weak spot it’s their defense! They just blew a pop up in shallow center field.

But the BEAST just tied the game.

Stanton with a two out, two strike, two run blast to left center!!  Might have still been going up when it cleared the fence!!

Hey, Rye!!

You have to consider the markets the teams are in and what the teams can draw in “market share” from spectator attendance and advertising and endorsement income!!

Those teams at the top of the payroll chart are located where the media and the home offices of all the major financial and retail companies are!!

The same rules apply to professional sports that apply to all business.  “YA’ GOTTA SPEND MONEY TO MAKE MONEY!!”

Those franchises spend more money cuase they’ve got more money to spend!!

Yep I know all that!
Once again the Dolans got lucky with a low payroll and made it as far as they did.

Don’t feel bad, Pard!  I live in a small market too!  We have pro football and hockey teams, (neither of which are doing well right now) and a fantastic college baseball program, locally.

No local pro baseball team and the two nearest pro teams will NEVER get my attention or respect.  I went to games in their ballparks when my son was a young ball player.  They were hosting our favorite team and we wanted to see them play in person.  The home crowd at St. Louis was worse than rude and and I was both embarrassed and insulted by the comments and language used in the presence of a young kid and his mom and grandmother!  They were vile!  I told one drunk guy on the third day we were there that if he opened his filthy mouth again in front of my family, I’d toss his ass out over the top rail of Busch Stadium!!  We were up in the nosebleed seats for the last game of the series and I guess he figured I meant what I said!

I never was a Braves fan, although my mom likes and follows them.  When we went there for a few games, I just got tired of that stupid chant and chop crap that they constantly carried on with. We went to see the Mets play there on several occasions and, luckily, our team was doing well on most occasions.  They had one particular game where the Braves were playing well and they lit in on that chop crap.  Our guys turned the game around on ‘em in the late innings and they got up and left! Then ol’ Turner married Hanoi Jane and that was when I decided that I wouldn’t spend another day or another dime in that stadium.

I/we attended games in Shea Stadium and the old Yankee Stadium a few times and it seemed like those fans appreciated good play and good players as much as they did a winning team! Folks at Shea cheered Hank Aaron when he stepped out onto the field! They cheered Willy Mays , even when he played for the Giants!! They even cheered Kolfax when the Dodgers, (I really hate even typing that name) came to play!

We saw a couple of mid-week afternoon games at Yankee Stadium back in ‘91. The atmosphere was laid back and fans applauded great plays by both teams, (they were playing the Rangers) and it was a pleasant experience for my family.

I love baseball!!  I don’t like rude people.  I like to see the game played for the love of the game!  There’s not much that’s better than an afternoon in the bleachers with a couple of hotdogs, the beverage of your choice, and your favorite snacks, watching good players doing what they’re born to do!!  It stinks when rude people, (I won’t call them fans) make it unpleasant, saying and doing things that embarrass and offend those who are there to see the game and support whichever team they choose!

Just my view from the seat of my old scooter as I wander down the backroad of life!!

I’ve been following baseball and Indians since about 1955. My dad used to take me to old Municipal Stadium. We were always fighting the Yankees and the Red Sox. Cleveland was a bigger market back then and we had better owners. In the 70’s and 80’s they were bad but came back in 1994 when Dick Jacobs bought the team and spent money because he was rich! These new owners don’t want to spend any money because they don’t have any and they’re cheap 🙄

I played baseball as a kid, little league, Pony League and later softball. I love the game!

Great post Blackwater!

Thank you!!

It’s really great when the real fans get to enjoy whatever sporting event without a bunch of animosity!

My son played baseball, football, and basketball when he was younger. He dropped basketball when it became too difficult to give three sports the attention they deserved.

In his fifth grade year, he was playing AAU basketball with a traveling team and he wound up playing against John Henderson who went on to star in college football at the University of Tennessee and later the NFL.

Ben, (my son, Hatfield) had to defend against John, who was already 6’ 4” tall and weighed 200 pounds!

We sat in the stands right next to John’s mom and dad. They were both really nice folks and we enjoyed watching the boys play. Ben was completely overmatched, but absolutely refused to give in and after the game, John told his dad that (please don’t be offended by the wording of this quote) “That’s the meanest little white boy I’ve ever played against!” Ben was probably about 5’ 6” and a little chunky at 140 pounds.

The two boys ended up playing football for rival high schools and met up for four years, splitting records, with the team John played for winning two state championships at the top division level. Mr. Henderson and I became friends because the boys were always competing at every turn.

Their senior season, they played at our home field and we had stands on just one side of the field because the railroad ran along one side and the bleachers backed up against a steep bank on the other side.

I sat in the stands, right at the 50 yard line and John’s dad sat right beside me. We had a ball! Mr. Henderson told me that big John had received his scholarship from UT and was looking forward to going.

John was a defensive lineman and he had a teammate that played on the right side of the defensive line.

Ben was the right guard on our offensive line his senior year. He was 5’ 11” and weighed 200 pounds and John was 6’ 7” and 310 pounds and his teammate was 6’ 2” and 300.

Our offense ran a quarterback sweep to the right on early downs and it was Ben’s job to seal on the back side!

The first time we ran the play, the defense was fooled and it went for several yards.  Later in that drive, they ran the play again and the two big defensive linemen both came across to try and break up the play, but Ben had pulled and when they all collided, both defenders landed on their backsides! Ben was still standing, although he’d been knocked half silly.

Mr. Henderson jumped up and slapped me on the back and grinned like a jackass eating saw briars. Then he laughed out loud and shouted, “Damn! John was right!  That IS the meanest white boy I’ve ever seen!”

It was all good natured and even though they trounced us, we all had a great time and enjoyed a great evening of sports and friendship!

Trips to the concession stand were made and whoever made the trip brought stuff back for the rest of us.  Every really good play was applauded, regardless of which team made it.  Just a great evening!

It’s a shame that sports today can’t be that way everywhere!?!?

I was gobsmacked at that.

6-1 Dodgers now.

I like it! :D

ADDED:

Frankly,  with some of the sloppy play by LA I'm surprised that the Mets haven't scored more.
