Primer prices

Recommended Posts

Went to a gun show Saturday. That's $8 and 2 hours I'll never get back.  I go to look for "stuff" and bargains.  Don't find many bargains these days.  I did see one vendor with some small pistol primers.  Was asking $90 a brick.  I am not in need of small pistol primers but would pick them up if I thought the price was reasonable.  I don't know if $90 is reasonable so I passed.  I have bricks of primers that have a price tag of $35 on them.  What are primers going for these days?

I heard another vendor on his phone with someone bemoaning that the chemicals needed to make powder are not being made.  He said that powders are going to be non-existent.  A friend said the government is having a hard time regulating (more regulating) firearms so they are attacking the components for rounds instead.  Make it so difficult and expensive to shoot that people won't use them.  Isn't that a lot like increasing the tax on tobacco products and alcohol to stop people from using?  They will never learn.  Funny thing is they need people to smoke and drink as the government has become dependent on the tax income stream.

Strange times we live in.

I have enough primers to keep shooting, so, I'm holding off buying any primers for now.

In my view, we should start to see further drops in price and supply increase over the next year, if the past year is indicative.

YMMV.

This is the thing that's confusing to me. The last time I bought primers - yeah back when you can buy (WHY DID YOU SAY YEAH YOU DORK? BACK WHEN YOU COULD BUY) 5,000 CCI for $99 - it didn't matter whether they were small pistol or small rifle or large pistol or large rifle. They all cost the same.

Now small pistol is the cheapest, and large pistol is about 10 bucks more. Small rifle's about $5 more than large pistol and large rifle - if you can find it at all - is about $15 more than small rifle.

What the hell?

That's what I thought but I haven't seen it yet.  Your prices must be higher yet by the time you factor in the exchange rate.  Question, I know the Canadian gubment doesn't make it easy to cross the border with firearms.  Can you cross the border with primers and powder without a hassle?  Don't mean to hijack my own thread.

Dealers and shop owners will tell ypu reloading powder and primers and ammo for that matter, are going to be in short supply, and ammo is gonna dry up!!! All this to scare you into buying their inflated crap. Scare tactics work. I'm set on primers and refuse to pay 90-100 bucks a brick. Keep them for that price. And I will remember the dealers who tried to screw me when it comes time for me again(again and again) to spend my hard earned money.

NOT gubment or guberment!

It's Mis-Government!!

Jeez. I thought I'd learned you guys by now!

As for crossing the border, into Canada with primers, powder, scopes etc. Canadian Border Services, doesn't care, as long as you pay duty, if you return in less than 48 hours.

Homeland Security on the other hand will arrest you and send you to Guantanamo if you're caught.(Joke, maybe)

Several Canadians have fallen afoul of US laws after attending Gun Shows etc. in the US, then returning across the border with things they are forbidden to purchase or own as non citizens.

Apparently, someone notes Canadian license plates and passes that info on to US border services.

CanadianGunNutz was full of tales of woe from Canadian dummies who tried it.

A local shop has them for $69.00/1000. That’s considered a good price now!

Somebody needs to educate me on this.  Are non US citizens not allowed to purchase or own things like primers and powder?  And SCOPES?!?   I've never heard of such a thing.

That's madness.

Recent trip to flagstaff had Federals priced between $99 and $89 for 1000 small pistol and/or small pistol mag primers.

It is what it is.  I don't think deal hunting is the way to go right now - otherwise you will never buy anything.

Let us not forget an article I just saw that said China has a stranglehold on nitrocellulose and antimony- 2 key ingredients for US!!

You reckon that’s gonna increase availability and lower prices??

Ive got enough to last years. Do you?

Oh, and as for the primers I sell- they’re at the going rates I find. At my cost.

I ain’t in it to make money.

Primer prices have doubled++ ever since the beginning of the plague. The days of $160 per 5,000 primers are over, never to be seen again....however, primers are widely available in small pistol/rifle, large pistol, small/large magnum and even some large rifle. Pay the price or don't reload seems to be the only option at present.

The problem is powder availability and will continue to get worse over time due to the Chinese (and others) not selling needed components to the US and Allies. Popular powders by all manufactures are non-existent now, especially Alliant and IMR powders.

Bottom line is, bite the bullet and buy what you need now while you still can.

Copper and steel have increased in cost, first about 125% 2020-2021, and not decreasing to about 70% above 2019 prices.

I buy Federal, Winchester, CCI, Remington or Fiocchi when < $75/k.

Wouldn't mind finding some large magnum rifle primers

I just bought 1K federal large rifle magnum from my local gun store for $88 out the door. Don’t need the magnum but any rifle primer is good right now.

There is a large list of things that can no longer be taken from the US, that we Canadian formerly were able to buy.

There has been some changes, since the program is no longer administered by the US Department of Commerce, but I'm not up to date.

Many have been getting primers from Bosnia. Not as good, but available

If it keeps on, I imagine those living near the Canada/US border will start buying things they need on the Canadian Reserves, much like they have been buying less expensive gasoline, inexpensive booze, cigarettes and other tobacco products.

Per Federal law, non-resident aliens (foreign tourists) cannot buy firearms.  However they would have to show me in writing where non-resident aliens (foreign tourists) cannot buy firearm related.

So, the Canadian gov't doesn't care if they get brought in, but the US gov't doesn't want them going out?  That's just crazy.  But, as a US citizen I could take such things out, but the Canadian gov't might try to hang me for bringing them in.  Makes perfect sense.    I wonder what would happen if I bought primers or powder in Canada and tried to bring them back into the US?

That has been my understanding.

Here is a link to internet site that sells firearms and related stuff and how they explain what can and can not be exported:

https://www.opticsplanet.com/export.html

And like many dealers and other internet sites, they are not going risk their business, and possibly criminal charges, to sell things that may or not be legal, it just isn't worth the risk.

That is what the pony express is for. I believe Tell will be at Land Run and you might have some friends from around there that might be going and can pick them up for you. I am delivering a Load All to a guy that is taking it back to a shooter in VA. Cowboys are great friends and will do this for others in most cases. Might want to check it out.

Anyone who gets up on the Soap Box to spout off that Chemicals for Powders are not being made are fools.  Spouting pure unadulterated garbage.  Those whom also spout the Government is attacking the rounds to control Firearms are just as wack-0.  NONE  of that kind of crap is in any way true.  Misguided Rumors, Propaganda and Scare Tactics.

However, it is true a large majority of powders and components are being diverged to military ammunition production to help supply our allies in several theaters.  This has been added to the shortages generated by Covid shutdowns.  Prices on the other hand are being artificially elevated by the manufacturers because THEY CAN.  Expecting prices to return to pre-pandemic levels is a pipe dream.  It simply isn't going to happen.  There are two choices.  Pay the prices for what you want/need.  Or Quit.

And if you think the above is bad, just give the Longshore Men a little time strangling imported goods for absolutely stupid demands.

Thanks for making me look things up again. My info was out of date.

It seems with the transfer of the responsibility regarding those kinds of exports to the Dept of Commerce, the restrictions have been eased.

Looks like I should think about renewing my passport.

I got a brick of much needed LRP transported from Ca to TX via the cowboy express a few years ago.  I've also used it to ship a long gun from TX to Montana and save shipping on a MEC SG press.

It does work and I have heard of others also using it. Cowboys are great.

Gov't suppression is what creates black markets and brings crime.
It was as true for Prohibition as it is true today for firearm components.

Amen to that.
