Marauder SASS #13056 Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 Another great loss! Prayers for his family & friends
Captain Bill Burt Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 An article of his was how I discovered SASS.
H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 I once read that he was allowed to compete under his own name without an alias.
Abilene, SASS # 27489 Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 This is sad. I got to visit with him several times at CMSA events and Shot Show when he was hanging out with Mike Harvey. He was very funny. We had an ongoing inside joke that he wasn't the real Phil Spangenberger but an impersonator.
Yankee, SASS #266 Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 I think his SASS alias was Rawhide Rawlins.
Silver Creek Jack Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 Will miss him and his writings, hugh loss, prayers for the family.
Reverend P. Babcock Chase Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 Phil was a great promoter of the western way and very knowledgeable of all things cowboy. I knew him professionally and visited him one time in LA. He gave me quite a tour including a real movie back lot and Stembridge Arms - probably the foremost firearms and prop rental outfit at the time. Most of all he was a true gentleman of the type rarely seen these days. Rev. Chase

Well... let's just say CAS or the Wild Bunch, I just wished he'd included contact info in that article... maybe I coulda started sooner!
Tex Jones, SASS 2263 Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 I remember seeing him and a bunch of folks riding horses in one of the Rose Bowl parades in LA years ago. A true cowboy spirit. RIP, Phil.
paradiddle Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 RIP to a great contributor and influence on all firearms.
H.G. Wells Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 Back in ’93 at EOT I watched a Wild West Show by Phil Spangenberger. He had two rows of balloons set up on fence posts, he displayed great showmanship and ability with single action pistols. He even had his horse bow to the crowd as he tipped his hat. What style! Then he did something I will never forget. Putting the reins in his teeth, a la John Wayne in “True Grit”, he galloped his horse down the lane of posts, brandishing a six-gun in each hand, and popping balloons as he rode. This was my favorite Wild West Show over the years, and one that will live long in my memory….
Cholla Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 I only live a few miles away and know several mutual friends who recommended I meet him. Like many things, I foolishly put it off, mainly because I was intimidated by his work. Now, that opportunity is lost.
Sixgun Seamus Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 I got to meet and talk briefly with him at an NRA Convention years ago. RIP.
The Rainmaker, SASS #11631 Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 We have lost a true Cowboy treasure. He will be missed. RIP Phil.
Dantankerous Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 Always loved his articles and writing style. A man full of knowledge. His passion and enthusiasm for Old West everything were infectious. Rest in Peace, Sir.
