Subdeacon Joe Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 I haven't yet found a video using the revised 1770 lyrics. What I find most interesting is that it was written by John Dickenson, sometimes called "The Penman of the Revolution," the only member of the Continental Congress to not sign the Declaration of Independence. 1770: 1770 version: Come swallow your bumpers, ye Tories, and roar, That the sons of fair freedom are hampered once more; But know that no cut-throats our spirits can tame, Nor a host of oppressors shall smother the flame. Chorus: In Freedom we're born, and, like sons of the brave, Will never surrender, But swear to defend her; And scorn to survive, if unable to save.
Alpo Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 Damn. They've been doing that "Uncle Sam wants you to buy war bonds" thing for a long time, haven't they?

A teacher of mine had these chits that one would buy to support the war in 1780, I believe. It was like a raffle but I don’t recall the prize. All of them were hand written with a seal stamped / embossed into it.
