Been following hurricane progress with an increasing disquiet!

20 foot predicted storm surge ... I am picturing 20 vertical feet of water ... that is a truly frightening distance to penetrate inland!

The ham radio Hurricane Watch Net activates 10 am this date.

I'll be listening on radio but you can honestly get a better signal over the Internet.

It’s more like a fast surge of flood water. Still, scary and destructive.

I have been at sea a couple of times during hurricane and tropical storm conditions. There’s nothing like it. It’s fantastic, exciting, awe inspiring and truly scary as hell all at the same time.

The closest I came to experiencing hurricane conditions on land was twice in Virginia, but most of the hurricane’s force had dwindled before reaching there. Also in and around Charlotte, NC dealing with the storms that occurred due to hurricanes making landfall. But I have never experienced a hurricane first hand on the coast in the south.

I hope and pray no one is injured or worse, loses their life in this or any storm.

An old and dear friend served aboard the USS Saratoga.

His descriptives were almost word for word the same as yours.

I got some inkling of just how awe-inspiring -- and just how scary -- by the change in his voice, as he spoke the words.

There is no testimony like the words of the man who's actually been there!

Thank you for this!

It will be a rain event with some wind when it gets to Tennessee. The ground here is already saturated and the stream along my property may breach. The rain on the other side of the Smokies looks to be twice what I will see. The Carolinas may have flooding for days starting Friday.

Hopefully everyone who should evacuate has done so or will very soon.

My daughter and son-in-law are on the NW edge of this.  She called yesterday to tell me not to worry because they are ready for it.

I'm going to worry anyway.  I've seen the weather change at the tip of a hat, both for better and worse, and I'll worry if I want to, so there.

Some low and high areas in that area. If she is not at least 6' or higher above the high tide mark, she could have problems with the surge. Not trying to alarm you but the water is pushing back up into Tampa Bay with tidal surge flooding in Gulfport already and it's low tide right now. If she is in a low lying area, I suggest that she take important items and leave now, go to a safe shelter or friends house in a higher location.

For what it's worth, the wind is not a serious problem in Pinellas Co.

this is the info I got from her. I don't think she is taking it as serious as she should be. I will pass on your info to her.

I have been watching the youtube tv since the link was put on here hours ago. I don't think Tampa has been hit hard yet but it is coming from what they are saying.

I am in Round Rock, TX. It is my daughter that isn't listening to me and now she says she can't get out. Everything around her is flooded. I told her to get her raincoat out and a ladder ready so she can climb up on her roof if necessary. Kids just don't listen and think they all know better than us old farts. I keep telling her we got old because we listened to others that knew more than we did.

Found a watering can on the porch, was picking up stuff for the wind tomorrow.

Have had a bit over 8 inches of rain in the last few days. Expect minimum of another inch overnight. Forecast was up to 5 inches for the entire event.

Creek has risen and dropped several times, down at the moment. I will be up several times during the night to check. Have RVs ready to hitch up if necessary. Don't expect to have to or we would already be on higher ground. The 8 inches did surprise me though.

Going to stay up a few more hours sending prayers to those in the direct line, then start taking naps through the night. Canceled everything for tomorrow, planning to stay home.

I have been watching early reports out of the Tampa area and there was a significant storm surge along the coast that pushed inland pretty far.  I know that power is out in many places in the Tampa area and parts farther north, so it may be a while before we hear from folks down there.

The storm in continuing to batter the south wind wind and rain with many areas experiencing record setting rain.  Flash Flooding is going to be a major issue in Georgia, the Carolina's, Tennessee, and Kentucky.  It's going to be a long recovery cycle.  Be Safe!

Prayers Up for everyone in the path of this storm.

2 million folks without power!

Posted

There was/is a lot of flooding around the Tampa Bay area related to storm/tidal surge. A lot of people still without power and some wind damage to roofs/trees/power lines/etc.

For me, no loss of power, a bunch of leaves/small branches down, road had about 2' - 2.5' of surge water (gone now), two sections of the neighbor's fence w/snaped 4" x 4" down in my yard and one piece of roof shingle on the ground (don't know if it's mine or not). My gal has owned this house (had it built/2nd in the neighborhood) for 40 years and has never seen the road flood anywhere near like last night. The wind wasn't too bad, 40 - 50 mph sustained for about an hour with gusts to 70 mph or so and the roof (evidently) held up good. The hurricane was at least 80 miles away at it's closest point, I'm glad it didn't get any closer. Speaking only for myself...we got lucky, real lucky.

While I got lucky, all up and down the coast, a ton of folks didn't get so lucky...especially where it made landfall. I wish those people a speedy and rapid recovery. For the people that are experiencing, or going to experience, the effects of the hurricane...I wish them the same luck that I had.

It appears that Alpoland got it real bad. I hope Alpo and other Saloon folks in that area are okay and check in soon.

I live in Palm Harbor which is on the Tampa Bay area, just north of St. Pete and Clearwater but fortunately my subdivision is on "rolling terrain".  I'm about 100 ft. above sea level so in no danger of flooding.  But the greater majority of the Bay area is a disaster waiting to happen, and it's not a question of if but of when!

I was born and raised on a beautiful beach in the Caribbean, was able to swim practically before I could walk, and at 18 I almost drowned in three feet of water.

I then parted ways with the ocean.  I understand the attraction of "snow birds" to our beaches, but, the way I see it it's like playing Russian Roulette.  God help all in the path of this new monster!

Rant over.

Well just talked with my daughter in St Pete. She still has power and did get some damage to her home and car. She luckily didn't get any water into the house since it is built up some but she got over 4 inches of rain in her garage where she has a lot of thing stored. She is afraid most of it is ruined since it was all in cardboard boxes. Her car shows some issues but she hasn't tried to start it yet. She isn't sure how high the water actually got last night but the rotor are all showing rust already but I told her that would rub off when she drove it and went to use them. We don't know if the engine was under water or not. Her fence was blown down and the solar panels on the roofs were blown off. Her poos area looks like someone poured sewage water into it. So overall I feel she was lucky that is all the damage she got.

pool.jpeg.ca1a3a9e138bfbe7055e7e25800ef6d8.jpeg

I want to thank all those that sent prayers and well wishes for her. She needed them and they worked. It could have been a lot worse and it wasn't. I just hope the others fared as well. I have not heard a number this morning as to how many didn't make it or how bad the damage up in the bend area is but I can only imagine it is a nightmare.

Thanks
