Somali pirates

Recommended Posts

The first video.

I understand that since we are Americans we are always right. However

The American destroyer sees another vessel. He calls in a backup warship, and the two of them go towards the third vessel.

The destroyer launches two boats full of armed men to board the vessel.

The men aboard the vessel start shooting at the boats full of armed men that are approaching them with the intent of boarding them.

The two warships return fire, eventually sinking the vessel and killing one crew member. The crew took to the small boats, and then surrendered to the two warships.

Here's my confusion. We have a boat apparently going on about its business. The Navy has no knowledge of what it is doing, or what it has been doing. And they attack it. And they sink it. And they kill one of the crew and wound several of the others.

And the somalis are pirates and the US Navy are the good guys?

"Curiously the Navy declined to prosecute the Somalis and repatriated them". I'm not curious about that. The Somalis didn't do anything. They were attacked by the United States Navy. If the Navy had taken them to trial anywhere, I'm pretty sure the Navy would have been the ones on trial.

Just reverse the nationalities of the three vessels involved. A United States boat is cruising along when it is attacked by two Somali warships. Would the US boat be considered a pirate that ambushed the Somalis?

The Somali vessels were not fishing, not idly enjoying the sea, not behaving like a cargo vessel, had all the appearances of a vessel with hostile intent and making haste toward a vessel intent on passage. Watcha think they should do, wait until fired upon?

remember USS Cole.

Since U.S. Navy ships have been rammed, bombed, hit by missiles and targeted the U.S. Navy doesn’t put up with sh**bags any longer.
When I was in the Navy, off of the coast near certain African & Mediterranean countries, we manned Ma Deuces and M60’s topside until we were out of the conflict area. Our orders were “If a boat gets close fire a few rounds across their bow. If they don’t turn away or if you see weaponry, light them up.” The term “close” was 100-200 yards.
If the vessel was a ship we went to GQ and pointed guns and missiles at them.
We never had any serious issues. We did have a boat off of Oman that just wouldn’t heed warnings until my partner popped a dozen 7.62 rounds into the water ahead of the boat. They turned and waved a white flag yelling something about needing fuel.
We launched a motor whaleboat and took them fuel.
I was aboard with an M14. My buddy had a Remington 870 and of course we had backup from the ship.
These guys were running on fumes. We gave them 10 gallons of JP5 and went back to the ship. No incident except for the paperwork the guy manning the M60 had to fill out for firing a weapon.

You never know the intentions of boats approaching a ship or hanging out near a ship.

How were they attacked?  Is the Coast Guard attacking when they approach a ship for investigation?

Yes, the Navy is the good guy in this action.  They were patrolling international waters with Combined Task Force 150 because of the pirate problem to merchant and passenger vessels.  The Navy saw a vessel that matched the pirate profile and sent RHIBs to investigate.  The RHIBs were fired upon.  To me, the pirates started the attack.  The Task Force actions were in the newspapers here, 9,000miles away.  You can't tell me the Somalians didn't know what was happening from 25 miles away.
