Not fired it yet

I wonder if others have this experience?

I've shot a 44 Magnum. Many times actually. The recoil was in my wrists.

I've shot a 454 casull. With that one the recoil was in my elbows. I fired an entire 20 round box and I had tennis elbow in my left arm as a result of it.

But when I fired the BFR 45/70, I felt the recoil in my shoulders.

This was strange, because prior to shooting all of these guns I would have assumed that the recoil would have been in my wrists with all of them. But it t'weren't.

I had a Marlin lever rifle in .45-70 and it was painful! I loaded down to a minimum and ot was still uncomfortable. The rifle is too light. I sold it. I can't imagine shooting a .45-70 from this revolver.

A late friend of mine had one of those. He would shoot the Hornady Leverevolution ammo in it. He would not let anyone else shoot it without watching him first. He would let one elbow break so the recoil would let it go over his shoulder instead of coming back and the revolver hitting him between the eyes

I bought a 95 Marlin. It hurt. I knew I was a wimp when it came to recoil, but I was amazed at how much it hurt.

Then I bought Mike Venturino's book SHOOTING LEVER RIFLES OF THE OLD WEST. Mike was a big old boy who like to shoot them big hard recoiling rifles. And in that book he said that the Marlin 95 hurts. So I decided it wasn't me.

I sold it and bought an 1886 Browning Winchester.

I have a contender in 45-70 I had pacmeyer grips on it and it tore through the hand grip I had to soften the loads to keep the grips together. It was hell on white tails. I will probably never shoot it again my arthritis won’t permit it

Same here. My 86 is a lot more fun to shoot.

45-70 one of the few cartridges that can be down loaded to hunt small game for the table or loaded to the point where it kills on one end and maims on the other.

You haven't fired it yet because you're averse to injury.........or because you can't find a crew for that crew served field piece?????

I know a guy (that likes shooting hot loads) that has one. He was shooting reloads in it one day, one went pop, he cocked hammer again and realized that the previous one was a squib so he safely remedied the situation and stopped shooting the gun. Took it home and removed the bullet from the barrel without damage to the barrel.

When he told me what had occurred later, he said "I wonder what would have happened if I'd have shot the next one?"

I replied, "Probably would have ruined your sex life." He was not amused.:o

I have an 1886 Browning (Japanese made) Winchester, too.  As I said in another recent message "it's a hoot to shoot" and about as useless to me as tits on a chicken.....but IT'S FUN!  Recoil is fairly heavy but tolerable if I don't shoot a whole box in one session.....and it's more powerful, about 3/4 the weight  and four inches shorter than my Italian made 1876 in .45-60.  I doesn't have as much felt recoil as the '76, either, but I'll keep the '76 because it fills a gap in my collection of Wincheterish lever action rifles

Funny how this works, but the older I get, the smarter the Old Man becomes ... 😄
Dear old Dad was going to Canada, grouse hunting.

He worked up some Bear Loads for his Ruger #1 in .45-70, the light weight carbine he intended to take as well, and he said "One shot off each shoulder is all you want."

I thought "Old man, you're getting weak in your old age, I'm a strapping young fellow, hold my beer!"

Umm ... no.

Dear old Dad was RIGHT!

One shot off each shoulder was absolutely positively ALL I WANTED!!! 😄😄😄

I can't imagine that the other big bore revolver cartridges wouldn't offer enough power and recoil in a handgun for virtually anyone without skipping up to a 45-70.

I do have a Marlin Cowboy 26" barrel. I shoot 405 gr in the 1300 to 1500 max velocity. I know there are loads that will push these to 2000fps but can't imagine shooting them. I haven't loaded the light loads with Unique or Trailboss that are popular with many. When I shoot my Marlin I  want to experience shooting a rifle caliber, but not the really heavy loadings. I'll shoot my 44mag if I want less.

I got to try one of those.  Usually I shoot a handgun one handed the first time to get the feel of it.   I was smart and went with a two hand grip.  I found it very stout but not unmanageable.  I  wouldn't want to shoot many in one session,  but 10 wouldn't be unreasonable.

I tried a H&R Handy Rifle on .45-70. That was rather unpleasant. Then I let the guy try my CVA 12 gauge double with 100 grains FFg and a patched .690 soft lead ball.

I had one, recoil was stout but not unbearable. I used to take it to shoots and let people try it. When I realized it was more fun to watch others shoot it than shoot it myself I sold it. I read some where it was strong enough to take Ruger #1 loads, didn't seem safe to me so I emailed Magnum Research. Ever wait forever to get a response to an email? I didn't that time, few hours later they sent what sounded like a frantic email saying in no uncertain terms NO #1 LOADS, trap door or Marlin loads only.

that should take care of those Dingo's for sure. Maybe even those fisty Roos's. LOL

I have the 1895 in 45-70 and have shot it a few times at the long range targets. I have a nice Limb Saver recoil pad on it and loaded my rounds with 12 grains of Unique and it was very comfortable shooting. I put around 30 rounds through it each day and it was accurate out to around 200 yards but didn't push it pasted that distance.

Years ago there was a used 45-70 BFR at my LGS. It included 39 rounds of ammo. Guy bought it new and fired it once. Decided he didn’t like it.
One day I noticed it was sold.
2 months later it was back. The gun sale included 38 rounds of ammo…

I went over to Bill's Trading Post today to see if I could find a holster.  Bill was on the phone (he almost always is) and was trying to get a container for .50 Bushwhacker revolver cartridges.  Never heard of that one before but the guy showed me a cartridge and told me all about it.  Among other things it has a 6" side venting compensator and some massive custom grips.

I DON'T OWN A RIFLE THAT'S AS POWERFUL AS THAT MONSTER!

He's also the proud owner of a half dozen other .50 pistols and a a couple of .450+ hand guns.

He didn't look insane or mentally deficient, but sure sounded like he was.

I thought anything that big came with wheels and a crew

I'm going to take a Pedersoli Rolling Block to our shoot on the 28th. Haven't shot it in years but I've got probably 20 rounds loaded for it now.  50-140.

That it does.

A friend was over to the house the other day, and he pointed and said, "What's that?" I told him it was a Ruger number one in 45-70, and handed it to him.

He said, "It's too light. That'll kill you".

Yeah it will. There are loads out there that the Ruger's action will stand. But this Ruger shooter's shoulder won't.

And a number one is a couple pounds heavier than a number three.

Well... I'd simply hire someone else to shoot it.

@Subdeacon Joe mentioned shooting an H&R Handi Rifle in .45-70.  I have a Buffalo Classic; 10" longer barrel and 1 1/4 lb heaver and it's not a bit unpleasant to shoot.  Stuffed with 3f behind a 405 gr pill.  :)

Years back saw a guy at the range with friends, kind of a non alcohol hold my beer moment, fire a 45-70 derringer.  Pretty quick all 3 guys were on the floor.  The shooter split his forehead open and knocked himself down, his buddies were ROFL.  Roughly the same time frame I bought a 45-70 sharps clone from a friend who was relocating and needed cash.  I loaded up 90 rounds with different bullets and powder charges and went to the range.  Shot them up.   Not that unpleasant at the time, but an interesting bruise. These days I don't shoot anything that hurts unless what I am shooting at would hurt me or mine more.

Dude, I'm older than dirt, silent generation.  I can still shoot the 416 or 375 if need be, but I don't seek pain anymore as I did as a young man.

No prob - old bothers me more than I would have expected.  Before I got married and settled down, I figured I'd be shot in some GF's bed by a jealous former BF before I was 45.
