Dilli GaHoot Galoot
Huge noir fan, love Dashiell Hammett (but Ross Macdonald is my favorite) and was excited to see this on Netflix. Loved it, they did a great job all around, the cast is great, the story line is true to the noir tradition and the firearms are accurate. Being nitpicky the only issue I had was a car involved in running someone down showed no damage afterwards, but given the vintage of the car I can forgive them for not desecrating a gorgeous car like that. But all that said, my absolute favorite part was the absence of heavy handed foreshadowing. Just grinds my gears when watching a 'modern' film that takes place in the 1930's or so and they for no reason other than the time frame, they toss in something like a radio bit with Hitler on the radio and the characters are like "oh, yeah, that has nothing to do with me and isn't going effect my life or plans in any way" Monsieur Spade takes place in 1963 and they stick to the parts that involve the plot, no winks to outside world event, no subtle (or not so subtle) shadows of world events not pertinent to the story, no "gosh, it would be great if we had a small personal communication device to clear this up" nothing other than the small part of the world that these people live in and the way their lives are intertwined. Would totally recommend Edited September 9 by Dilli GaHoot Galoot
