Having learned the hard way that each championship or match has a different course of fire for long range matches, what is the Land Run course of fire for long range? (How many rounds at what distance)

Rifle Caliber Lever Action – Smokeless & Black Powder

  • All targets are at 200 meters
  • Target size is 26” tall X 32” wide (IHMSA rams)
  • Each shooter has 10 minutes to complete the course:
      • 3 sighters on swinger target
      • When ready say the line “Boomers”
      • At the beep, engage 10 targets in a sweep from either direction
      • Targets must fall to be scored as a hit and targets shot out of order are a miss

Rifle Caliber Single Shot – Smokeless & Black Powder

  • All targets are at 300 meters
  • Target size is 14” tall X 22” wide (IHMSA pigs)
  • Each shooter has 10 minutes to complete the course:
      • 3 sighters on swinger target
      • When ready say the line “Boomers”
      • At the beep, engage 10 targets in a sweep from either direction

Shooter first shot knocks down first target. HIT

Second shot knockdown target three MISS

Is the third shot also a MISS?

My Pard Ranger Tays has been practicing pretty hard for Land Run Long Range. It will be hard for him to improve on last year’s outing where he won all 4 categories.

SS Smokekess

SS BP

lever smokeless

lever BP.

He was in a zone last year. Hit all 10 with a couple. I think worst was 7 or 8 out of 10. Nobody else came close.

Good luck this year Ranger. Sorry I won’t be there to shoot with you.

If you haven't shot long range and Land Run, you're missing out.  They have a beautiful silhouette course with pneumatic reset.  Typical black rams and pigs are the targets.  Everything is under shade and nice shooting tables if you want to use them.

Last year was well organized and shooters moved through nicely.

See ya'll there again this year!

My wife and I shot lever action rifle this year.  There were two sighters this year.  We shot off cross sticks on benches.  Most shot the left and middle banks of targets as the number three target on the right bank had a shadow behind it and there was poor contrast between the target and the background.  My wife loved seeing her targets tip over at 200 meters.  She and our 30-30 Marlin performed well.

What’s the best rifle action for getting started in SS long range? Recommendations?

Depends...  Most everyone has a favored action for either lever action or single shot.  Answers will reflect those opinions.  Probably the most popular rifle cartridge lever actions will be the Winchester 94, 1886, Marlin 336, or 1895.  Actual cartridge will vary with the range anticipated and potential wind conditions.  I will wager that the most used single shots will be the Winchester 1885 or Sharps 1874 or one of it's variants.  Again, actual cartridge will largely depend on anticipated range and wind conditions.

Probably more important than the model gun will be sights.  Tang peeps of various configurations are always a boon to sighting for distance.  (Long sight radius aids accuracy).

There are pros and cons to each of the models listed, as well as others.  Same with cartridge choices.  I certainly have my favorites, and can list reasons therefore, but like any other, everything has it's limitations.  How the shooter deals with those limitations when their choice is less than optimal can be either eye-opening or the basis of disappointment.

For the single shot, I forgot to include the Remington :Rolling Block".

Griff gave a good reply.  Here are some of my thoughts:

Heavy barreled, target grade rifles are preferred.  While lever action shooters often use Marbles tang sights they are unsuitable for SS long range.

38-55 is a popular caliber for those sensitive to recoil.

Unfortunately, many smaller matches don’t have separate black powder categories.  Keep that in mind in your selection of ammo for a match.  Black powder subs are legal for CAS side matches.

You will probably shoot off of cross sticks.  Practice with cross sticks and bring your own to a match as there may be none to borrow.

Those folks at Land Run need to feed them pigs, they were skinny this year!

Huge thanks to Fairplay, Bristlecone, Suzy Q and GW for running the side match.  It ran really smooth!!

Sounds more like a black Powder Silhouette Match than a Standard Long-Range Match?

It's on their Silhouette course.  But Lever rifle at RAMS @ 200M and Single Shot at PIGS @ 300M

Every range has its own particular set up for long range depending on what is available for target distances, number of targets and firing points.  So I am not sure there is really a "Standard".

I have never shot a SASS Long Range-Match, and I have shot in 8 different State Matches some multiple times plus Club Matches, that one had to knock something over.  Most Matches are designed for the shooter to hit a standing metal target, no matter what the distance might be.

Are there other SASS Matches where a shooter has to knock something over?  None that I know of on the East Coast.
