1940s Smith and Wesson poster. Saw it in the movie Phantom From Space on the wall of a police station.

 

 

In looking for that particular one, I also found 

 

 

 

That first one sold at auction for around $400.

I WANT a Terrier, a 5 inch 38/44 Heavy Duty, and a K32 (oh man how I want a K32). And if I manage to get all of them, then a 5-inch 357 would be nice.

I recall that when I was 16 a friend of my Dad’s let me shoot his Smith & Wesson model 29 with .44 Magnum loads. I was using “The perfect hold”. I learned this hold from a poster in the local gun store. Perhaps from a copy of that very poster. 
I do not recommend this hold with a .44 Magnum. 
I think I can add this experience to the list of things I call “Why my right thumb joint is screwed up”.

In one of the Matt Helm books, a rookie agent was shot with a Model 29. The local Mafia presented Matt with the supposed shooter. A black boxer named Arthur "Basher" Brown. He's not really the shooter, but they figure if they give him to Helm, Helm will quit looking for the real shooter, which would cause them aggravation.

 

Helm does not believe that Mr Brown is the shooter. He wants to see some proof. So they go to the pistol range. He told Brown that he wanted him to put two shots in that silhouette at 15 yards. If he couldn't do that, then Helm would know that Brown was not really the shooter.

 

So Brown is preparing to fire. Cocks the gun and holds it in "the perfect position".

 

Dislocates his thumb knuckle.

 

This was the first time I had ever heard of putting your thumb on the recoil shield. Matter of fact, until your post with that beautiful picture, it's the only time I ever heard about putting your thumb on the recoil shield. Seemed like a stupid idea when I first read of it, low these many years ago. Still seems like a stupid idea. The purpose of having an opposable thumb is so you can have a grip. Put that thumb down and grip the other side of the gun.

With a coach to correct your mistakes. 

 

If you practice your mistakes you get really good at making mistakes.

K32, K38 (with proper loads) not a great deal of difference - have both in target configuration.  Far easier to find 38 Special components.

Especially for the 32. A 6-inch K32 Masterpiece probably going to be at least 2500. And that's just for something in good shootable condition. 90% or better --- I probably ain't tall enough to have pockets that deep.

I have a K38. I have a K22. I need the K32 to complete the set.

 

You understand that, don't you?

 

Also need a K38 Combat Masterpiece, but not as much as I need that K32.
