School grade nomenclature

Where you live, where you grew up. How did you call the grades in school?

I went to first grade, fifth grade, 12th grade.

There's a Calvin strip in the comics thread, where Calvin says they can make him go to grade 8. In the strip for better or for worse, they go to grade one, grade 4, grade 9.

Now when I first saw that I thought it was because it took place in Canada and they talked funny. But I've seen other, in print, references to grade two or grade 9 or grade 11. Never heard anybody say it. Just see it.

So y'all - first grade, or grade one? 5th grade or grade 5?

And add in what section of the country you grew up in. See if that gives me an idea of where terms are used.

Raised in southern Colorado.

Elementary was first grade through 6th grade.

Three years of Junior High, still 7th grade through 9th grade.

In high school we were sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

Here in modern day Mizzoorah, junior high is now "middle school", don't know why.

Same in central Ohio. Except for 12th grade. THEN we were SENIORS, so that everybody else knew that we almost out of there.

When I was in high school we were sophomores and juniors and seniors, but we were still in 10th grade and 11th grade and 12th grade.

I would occasionally find reference in a novel to 9th graders being in high school. Freshmen.

But one through six was elementary and 7 8 9 was Junior High and 10 11 12 was high school.

Then when my kids were in school, elementary was one through five, then there was a sixth grade center, where all the sixth graders from the whole school district went and all they taught was sixth grade. And they still did 7 8 9, then 10 11 12.

About the time my kids got out of school they did away with the sixth grade center, but elementary was still one through five, and then Middle School was six seven and eight. No more such thing as Junior High School. And high school now started at 9th grade.

I think they do this intentionally just to mess with my head. Because I can think of no logical reason for this.

Nursery school,Kindergarten, 1st grade thru 8th grade. 7th& 8th were also junior high. Then High school, freshman thru senior, sometimes referred to as 9th thru 12th. But typically freshman thru senior.

When I went to school junior high was 7th and 8th. High school 9 through 12. I'm just hearing that locally now my grandson will be in junior high 6th through 8th grades then high school. Apparently at some of the 6th through 8th grade junior highs the 6th graders are still seperated from the 7th and 8th graders who mix around more.

 Same in Virginia.

Then we moved to North Carolina where 7th, 8th & 9th are "middle school".

What he said, location and all. Senior and twelfth were interchangeable, depending on situation.

Northern Albert Canada:

Grades one to 8 were "Primary" then High School 9 to 12

Ontario had a grade 13 that was supposed to be first year University equivalent.

Early to late 1950's early 1960 period.

Private Kindergarten, Grade School 1st through 6th, Junior High 7th through 9th, High School 10th through 12th.

College Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, Senior again ( I changed majors in mid stream.   Seemed to be a good idea at the time.)

being a retired teacher that started just after the middle school concept arrived from California('70)

the idea was middle school 6-8 grades, was supposed to be more like elementary than high school--this was to help those kids that needed a bit more 'hand-holding' as they grew up

didn't work out that way--middle was more of a smaller version of the high schools

Houston area.

Did your elementary schools have names? Or numbers?

I was just thinking that I have heard some places in the country - mostly the Northeast - called them primary schools. And I have read, often, of PS 17 and PS 21 and stuff like that. Apparently they didn't give them names in New York City. They got numbers. Primary School 17 instead of Oak Grove Elementary.

Although I suppose that could be Public School 17. I don't speak New Yorkese.

Same as J-Bar in Northern New Jersey. We had Kindergarten in the Elementary School.

My Aunt taught Kindergarten in Rochester, NY until retirement. Then moved to Florida where she opened a private Pre-School and Kindergarten. As I remember it FL required Kindergarten but the local school district did not provide it, so it was on the parents to pay for it privately. I’m not sure if that was state wide or only the local school district. Eventually there was public school kindergarten and my Aunt taught in the public school for a couple of years before resuming retirement. Maybe Alpo knows if that was a state wide policy.

My Aunt was wonderful to myself and my brothers. She was always a “Teacher” with us, kind and understanding, but always instructing. She married her high school sweetheart at age 65. Long story there. It was her first and only marriage. Changed her for the better. And, I got an Uncle out of the deal. Sad that it took so long, but wonderful that she spent her last years so happy. Good memories there also.

Alpo, Our’s was Warren Point Elementary School, named after a section of the ‘Borough’ I grew up in. It is so small, 4 sq miles, I’m still surprised they had sections with different names under the Borough designation.

In the former second world countries ( Russia and satellite countries) it’s all a bit weird, ok more than a bit.

There is often a kindergarten and it goes on to 11th year (not 12th) as best as I have been told. Having started this discussion I will digress far afield of the years.

Now with typical Soviet efficiency, All schools start on 1 September. School, universities, college, even preschool, Sunday or not, classes start Sept 1.  Expect to see everyone well dressed, moms bringing the young ones for their first day, etc.

I could go on and on about my observations of the weirdnesses.

When I started school, I started in the first grade.

My granddaughter started in Head start, then she went to kindergarten, and then to first grade. So first grade was actually the third year of school.

I wonder how I managed to gain any education, only going to school for 12 years, when everyone does 14 now.

my kindergarten was a two room clapbiard school house that we spend two years in before going to second grade - it even had the school bell in the tower between the entrance to the two classrooms ,

i never got to see the left classroom as i got sent to catholic school for the next eight years , and yes it was 1st grade through 8th grade , at that point i transfered to the public system for junior high - 9th grade or freshman depending on who you spoke with ,

then high school of sophomore-junior-senior , repeated in college
