Pat Riot Posted September 3, 2024 Posted September 3, 2024 My three words are “I miss them”. My one and only dove hunting experience was quite humbling. A 3 day weekend was a 1% success.
Warden Callaway Posted September 3, 2024 Posted September 3, 2024 Hanging out clothes on the "solar dryer", I could hear the "puck", "puck", "puck" of shotguns in the distance. I was setting on the Mound yesterday listening to the constant sound of gunfire to the north. Well over a hundred shots. There was a milo field there last year and there is a lot of volunteer crop established.
Gracos Kid Posted September 3, 2024 Posted September 3, 2024 Last time I was in a South Georgia dove field, a guy in an adjoining field sitting on the ground fired a shot that hit me in the face. The distance was such that it barely stung, but I did call out to him and let him know. It was then that I realized he only had one arm and was using his foot to help raise his gun to follow the dove in flight.

Hardpan Curmudgeon SASS #8967 Posted September 3, 2024 Author Posted September 3, 2024 Well, it was still fun. BUT! They better be coming toward or going away; trying to figure out the lead on crossing shots with that fast steel is a booger. And we tried to keep shots within 25 yards - much beyond that and they might shed a feather or two as they cut in the afterburners. Sassparilla expended an entire box of W-W 1 1/8 oz #6 steel through his "new" Mossberg without a single bird; he then switched to his CZ Woodcock and W-W 1 oz #7's and he started 'em. I was doing well enough with my Beretta AL-2. I used that same gun when I started shooting doves on that ranch back in '71 or '72... the first time was as a "blind dates," me with Hank's cousin Connie, and Hank with a friend of hers. The girls got to be our bird dogs; I do not think they were overly impressed. 😆 Neither of us ever had a follow-up date; at least Connie is still civil whenever I see her at weddings or funerals.

Guy remembers he needs extra socks for his hunting trip so he calls home and asks his wife to add a couple pair of socks to his bag so when she brings his stuff when picking him up from work. She picks him up from work and takes him to the parking lot to meet the other guys since he was riding with one of them. He spends the next week hunting. When he gets home he starts nagging at his wife about not packing the extra socks he asked for and she said she did pack them. He said he didn't find them and she goes and opens up his gun case and right there they were. TM
Cold Lake Kid, SASS # 51474 Posted September 3, 2024 Posted September 3, 2024 When we had to switch to steel for migratory birds, we found leading was no longer necessary. Once the manufacturers figured it out; that they could drive steel shot faster without the deformation of lead shot and we hunters got the word, it was a game changer. Longer leads were not needed, while larger shot was!.

Michigan Slim Posted September 4, 2024 Posted September 4, 2024 I missed and missed with my old Mossberg 500. Picked up my H&R .410 and started wacking them. No idea how that happened.

Your idea sounds more successful.

Putting loose seed on the ground is. The state and feds plant all the time just for this. Regs read, thank you. I just seeded a food plot for deer. State recommended seed mix.

Closest thing to filet mignon I've ever had. Think I'll plant some sunflowers at our retriever club - plenty of live flyers, free for the taking! Yeah dove is good. I breast them out when I clean them. The legs aren't worth the hassle. Same thing I do with quail. Try wrapping the breast around a bit of jalapeno and then wrap bacon around it then slap it on the grill until the bacon is cooked. They are very good this way. I wanted to add that I also soak them in salt water overnight to draw out all the blood before cooking them. So I guess my 3 words would be Dove - Bacon - Jalapeno. TM
