Father Kit Cool Gun Garth
Rachel Herz, a professor of psychiatry at Brown University and author of The Scent of Desire in her research and experiments indicate people do not respond to odours while they are in the dreaming phase of sleep (REM) or deep sleep. "You cannot smell while you are asleep," she says. "You don't smell the coffee and wake up; rather you wake up and then smell the coffee." But, she says, if we very briefly wake up and perceive the scent of coffee, it will wake us further if we are interested in it.
Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770
I don't think that this is correct. I know for a fact that my wife will wake up when exposed to excessive flatulence.

Pat Riot
I don’t agree with the professor’s assessment. I have smelled coffee when asleep. Coffee, smoke, perfumes, food, my dog’s bad breath.
Rip Snorter
I certainly have been awakened by the smell of dog poop from an old dog friend nearing the end of life.

Calamity Kris
I disagree as well. When our furnace caught fire in St Louis, the smoke woke me long before the smoke detectors went off.

Maybe it isn't the smell but the roar of thunder that wakes her up....or getting cold when you blow the covers off. 1
