Beartrap SASS#57175
I just read an ad that made my head spin! Am I reading something wrong? $699 for a 5 lb jug of Trail Boss! It looks to me like it's $140/lb for a powder that takes about 5 times as much of to push a freedom seed as Titegroup at $36/lb. If my perception is correct does using it guarantee immortality or something? I realize some people use it for fear of overcharging, but $140/lb?????? 1

Titegroup (as well as others currently readily available) can also be used for subsonic loads! Trail Boss is not unique in that respect.
Three Foot Johnson
This was less than a year and a half ago - two 9 oz bottles sold for $855, plus $30 shipping, plus hazmat. It was discontinued June 1st, 2018, and allegedly the silencer/sub-sonic shooters drove the price through the roof. $760 per pound... considerably more than silver... Rye Miles #13621
The only reason to use TB is so you can fill the case up like BP. It’s certainly not worth that kind of money! If you don’t trust yourself take the extra time and spoon feed your rounds with any smokeless powder and you’ll have enough money left over to buy a gun!😂 1
Prairie Dawg, SASS #50329
Last year at Guns of August, some shooters from New England blew up two Colts. Evidently, the guy who did the loading was used to TB, but ran out & loaded something else. He evidently severely overloaded some of his cartridges, and blew up two pistols, a Colt & a clone. Ask him if $699 for a 5-pound jug is excessive. I shoot with John Barleycorn, and he is just selling the TB at "market" prices. He's a straight-up guy! --Dawg Edited August 30 by Prairie Dawg, SASS #50329

I freely admit to the fact that I made a rather foolish mistake with Win 231. So much so that I am rather skittish to keep using the stuff. I must have double charged two cases. I've still got alot of rounds to break down and start over on. When all is said and done, it's impossible to make that kind of a mistake with Trailboss, and that's one of the reasons I like it. I also like how even a max load of the stuff is a rather mild load. It's useful for everything from .32 S&W to .45-70. (With a few exceptions.) Another good powder is Red Dot, but I haven't been able to find that for years either. As far as the $700 a jug price, I do think that is overpriced, and I passed on it. When I told the guy he was charging too much and offered less, he said he'd be selling it at a loss. I'm all for capitalism, but sometimes things get out of whack. If there is any truth to the statement on ADI's website about it being back at the end of this year, people who paid so much for it just to resell it for a profit are gonna be stuck. 1

You can add in some primers or other powder to spread out the Hazmat and shipping charges too. What was your W-231 charge? I would think most guns would hold up to a double charge from a light cowboy load? There are videos out there of people loading double charges in semi-auto pistols for testing and the guns survive just fine. A lot of the modern speculation is that is take a triple charges or more to really blow up modern guns. Unless you are running some really hot loads to begin with. Double charging a max load 44 mag will likely take out a gun short of maybe a Super Redhawk.
H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619
5.9 grains with a 200 grain bullet. Assuming a double charge, that would be 11.8, which is well over the 8 grain max load.
Chief Rick
If you don't think it's worth it, don't buy it. Assuming a double charge, that would be 11.8, which is well over the 8 grain max load. This is way off topic for a cowboy action forum, but would those Colts be considered Tier 1 or Tier 2? Can they handle factory 45 acp loads? Reading around online 10-12gr of W231 in a 45 colt with a 200gr bullet is around 45 acp pressures. The Ruger only loads were running 20+grs behind 250gr bullets. "Brian Peace in his reloading articles (HandLoader magazine) on the .45 Colt came up with the three tiers of loading for the .45 Colt. Tier 1 is standard SAAMI pressure loads 14K psi. Tier 2 is up to 23K psi, and Tier 3 is Ruger Only Loads 30K psi. Why Tier 2? Well the medium frame New Vaquero and the medium frame BH flattop came along which couldn't handle Tier 3 loads, but it still could handle .45 ACP which has a high end of 23K PSI. So that allows the flattops and New Vaqueros more leaway on loading the .45 Colt ie. up to Tier 2 pressures. Hope that clarifies where the 'Tiers' came from!" 25 minutes ago, H. K. High Spade Mikey Wilson
I bought two 5 lb jugs of TB about 10 years ago at $108 per. I still have about 4 lb left. I use it in all my CB loads of 32WCF, 38 spcl, 45 Scofield, 45 Colt, as well as in my 45-70. I really like it, but I would never pay that price for it. Since TB has been vertually non existant for a few years now I have already done my workup for loads with different powders for the above calibers. When I run out of TB I'll switch.
Totes Magoats
I read a penny Baseball card sold for $7.2 Million dollars recently. Things are worth what people will pay. Some would shake their head when folks were paying $150 for 1K primers, but I bought some. I've got a stash of Trail Boss, didn't pay near those prices for, but also wouldn't sell it for double what I actually paid. Smokin Gator SASS #29736
Coincidentally a shooter asked me about Trailboss for reduced 30 30 loads. I told him first off about the current lack of ability to find it now. I also mentioned it's apparent popularity with the 300 Blackout shooters and what some of them were paying for it. I had tried it a little when it was pretty new and didn't really like it. This wasn't rifle caliber loads though. I said I'd look around because I knew I had at least a partial bottle. Checked and found it plus one full bottle. Told him I'd bring it to the next match. He can just have it. I just use Unique for my 44 or 45 caliber revolvers. The partial csn had a $13.95 sticker on it.
Don Coyote, SASS #63736
I tried some TB back when we 1st started CAS and reloading. Didn't like the way it metered in the 650 so its been setting in my powder locker for well over 15 years. Just weighed the powder and has 7 oz. on the bottle. Price on the top is $14.99. This looks like it will be a good replacement. Will try for rifle/pistol as well.
