German Jim
Question. Is it safe to shoot C&B pistols two handed? I know nothing about them. I'm interested in possibly getting one to shoot at a match. I don't think my hand is big enough or strong enough to handle one shooting it one handed. If gripping it two handed, would the caps going off cause any burns on my support hand? That's my concern. Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933
Getting a cap frag burn on either hand is possible. It is one of the charms of shooting C&B. 3
Prairie Dawg, SASS #50329
It is perfectly safe to shoot cap guns two-handed. I did it when I hurt my shoulder. Caps don't usually fragment & fall off the cylinder, but when it happens, they are hot. Usually, just a flick of the wrist, kicks them to the ground. But normally, it is not a problem. --Dawg
Erasmus
I second that statement on cap fragments. Also, depending on how big your mitts and the gun are, your support hand might get a little hair burnt off it. That said, I think it would be bad to be shooting two handed if you had a chain fire. Not earth shatteringly bad, but not great. Edited August 30 by Erasmus

None of these newbies around these parts have a clue, lack the necessary experience... but back when SASS started (and before), the then "Black Powder" required the used of percussion pistols. BP propellant in rifle & shotgun. And... since "Duelist" was still far in the future; one-handed handgun use was discouraged, (in fact one member of the "Wild Bunch" argued against its use, even unofficially); THUS, we shot 2-handed. However, the above notes about caps & fragments are valid, although I don't recall that happening all that much. But... I have slept since then!😉
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971
I often shoot my ROAs two-handed in FC in local matches (and win my category if I have no competition.). I have never been injured by a flying cap fragment.

Sedalia Dave
Shooting a C&B pistol 2 handed is no more dangerous than shooting any other pistol 2 handed. Just lake cartridge guns, you do not want any appendages in line with or forward of the front of the cylinder. If cap fragments come out of the gun they will almost always be on the RH side of the pistol. If you're really worried about them wear a thin leather glove on your right hand. Chain fires sound scary but the safest place to be if one occurs is holding the pistol. The pistol is not going to explode and it will not be destroyed even if all 6 chambers went off. Going to feel a lot more recoil. Also you you might have to wipe a smear of lead off the sides of the barrel and possibly pry a ball out of the loading lever ram but the gun will not blow up.

If gripping it two handed, would the caps going off cause any burns on my support hand? That's my concern. I have a pair of Remington .36 revolvers I use, both with the normal cylinder and with conversion cylinders. They are not modified for SASS and I cannot fire them quickly one handed. I've never been burned by caps, powder or anything else. Same rule applies as to modern revolvers - don't put your hand in front of the cylinder and you will be ok. Colorado Coffinmaker
WELL . . . HECK GRIFF and SEDALIA DAVE already Said what I was going to say, along with Prairie Dawg. As with any revolver, keep your soft tender parts behind the cylinder face and go for it. And just for general information, a "Chain Fire" is no big deal. Kind of exciting, lots of smoke and flame. A goodly KaWhaump and little if anything else. Not even much recoil even when (seldom) all six go. Tis a pretty impressive Ball of Fire at a night shoot though. Wheeeeeeeeeeeee. No, didn't happen to me. Twaz 'nother guy.

The Blarney Kid
Shoot my C&B revolvers 2-handed especially since I had a pinched nerve on my right side that shut down my right arm until physical therapy got me back to almost normal, but my right arm is not yet strong enough to shoot one-handed even if I wanted to. Especially if I shoot my Walker Colt.
Pee Wee #15785
I have shot C&B from the tender age of 11 or 12 always using one hand but have seen it shot two handed from then also. Always make sure all loaded chambers are capped as chain fires are almost always from a charged cylinder without a cap. Only time I had a chain fire there was a split in the cylinder of an ASM 1860 Army. Used that gun for two years before getting 1851 Navies. Diamond Curly SASS#57086
I shoot my C&B revolvers duelist but would shoot two handed if I had too. I do shoot with a guy who shoots two handed and claims his open tops shoot smoother as a duelist but like shooting two handed. He says the open tops sometimes lock up shooting two handed.
