Matt Dillon

Alpo

Recommended Posts

I was just thinking of Festus, and I could hear him saying Matthew, with his drawl, in my head.

And I remembered that Chester called him Mr Dillon.

Started thinking about what people called him to his face, and why they might use that term.

Now, Kitty called him Matt, but there was something going on between him and her. I was never a big Gunsmoke fan so I don't remember what Doc called him.

I was wondering if Chester called him Mr because he was his superior. Or if because he was younger.

And if Festus, even though Matt was his superior, called him by his first name because their ages were similar. Actually I think Festus was older. That can be a problem with a lot of people - I was a man growed while you was still sucking on your mama's teat, and I'm supposed to call you "mister"??

I’m a big Gunsmoke fan but I can’t recall what Doc called him.

The thing that bugs me is the dialogue between Matt and Chester. The use each others names multiple times in one conversation.

EX:

Well Chester I think we should ride out after them , Well Mr Dillon I agree. Should I get your horse Mr. Dillon? Yes Chester go get it. Okay Mr Dillon I’ll go now. Well thanks Chester!!! 🙄 How many times do the have to repeat their names?😳

Been awhile since I've watched an episode of Gunsmoke, so I don't have an answer to offer you Mr. Alpo.

Festus generally calls him Matthew. Pronounced "Matyou". Doc, Kitty,& Newly call him Matt and the bad guys call him Dillon. Best of my recollection!!

Some cultures talk that way.  Another possibility is that the actors don't know what will make the final cut and what will be on the editor's floor, so every sentence has to stand on it's own.

Culture in Dodge City in the 1880’s?? I doubt they talked like that.
It’s the only show on TV that’s had dialogue like that. I think it was the directors and writers. Stupid to my ears!

I record and watch Gunsmoke nearly every night on the INSP network. The Rifleman too. These were two of my favorite shows growing up. I especially like the first few seasons of Gunsmoke in B/W. They were only 30 minutes up until about Season 8. I get a kick out of hearing Matt enter the Longbranch and say "Hello Kitty". All I can see are the Hello Kitty toys my daughter had growing up:D

Doc referred to Matt in different ways.

When talking with Kitty, Festus, Newt,.....  he would call him Matt.

If he were talking with a patient or someone who needed some help or advice, he would refer to him as Marshall Dillon if the patient didn't know Matt.

But when a person knew Matt and the Doc was trying to emphasize Matt as a strong character, he often referred to him at MATT DILLON.

Example:  when some of those bad guys tried to take over the town or want to gun down Matt, there were times Doc would say

something like....... "Matt Dillon will kill you".

Remember those few episodes with Steve Forrest?   One of them was 'MANNON'.

And in another, he was Will Mannon.  Plus a couple others, one being 'The Widowmaker'.

EDIT:  and there were times in personal conversations where Doc actually called him 'Matthew'.

I had to look him up! Mannon, he beat the living daylights out of Kitty but Matt wound up getting him!

Hey Rye,

if you ever want to watch one of THE BEST episodes of Gunsmoke, ya gotta watch 'The Widowmaker' with

Steve Forrest.  Don't miss the beginning of it.   Its one of my favorites.

similar to the Jesse Stone movies:  Jesse wanted everyone to call him "Jesse."  and the boxing promoter would use his full name

tried that with my wife and almost got hit with a frying pan 🍳

Most everybody called him Jesse, but he wanted to hear it every time they said anything to him. A little much in my opinion, but I really liked the series.

Here's a bit of Robert B. Parker trivia for you. In one of the Jesse Stone movies, Jesse meets a woman lawyer named Rita Fiore. The character of Rita Fiore was also in season 2 of "Spenser for Hire", as an Assistant D.A.

And in several of the books.

I don't remember whether it was a Spenser book or a Jesse Stone book, but they bring in Sunny Randall. Who is a PI that has her own series from Parker.

Gotta love the RBP books.

I have the entire collection of the Spenser series, including the ones by Ace Atkins.

Started collection them many years ago. I also have the Jesse Stone ones.

I gave the Sunny Randell ones to the library.

Oh, but I've kept the Everitt and Hithch ones.

Fun to read.
